It still drives me crazy to see BG even mentioned in articles such as this. It also drives me crazy when other college town MAC schools that don't do as well W/L as we do have better attendance figures. I know we were close to the 15,000, but the fact of the matter is, we fell short. If we average about 100 more fans per game, our name isn't getting drug through the mud in crappy news like this. It just goes to show how every one who shows up counts for something.

Yep...I'd rather see asshats in OSU gear at the Doyt than empty seats...

Just clarifying.

There are some interesting points brought up here.

There are a few things I'd like to elaborate on. One, it would help our stadium attendance if we got some of the big name schools we play to come to the Doyt. Our philosophy is that we take the money for the conference every time, and don't fight to get big names into our stadium. Sure, the money is great, but it won't do us much good if we get bumped down to double A.

Two, and this ties both into the previous point and into a point made on the article. It doesn't help when almost all of our home games come after October 1st. It isn't a great excuse, but it has some merit. I know this will sound lame to a lot of people on here, but the farmers just can't make it to a football game during harvest. I know that my father misses about two games a year (for which he has season tickets) unless it rains or they are late games. Plus, a lot of the older population around here have no desire to go to a football game when the weather gets cold and nasty.

But having said that, the university could help the situation a little by getting those shuttles to take people to the stadium. Maybe they do, but I've never seen it advertised that they do. If they could get the word out, and let people know where the pick-up/drop-off zones would be from the parking lots that are further out.....it could help.

But after all that....and I know I'm getting winded here.....I don't think we shouldn't get too worried about this. It seems as though we hear these same threats by the NCAA every few years. Nothing has ever came from it. I think they know that the Mid-Major conferences would collapse if they actually enforced the rule. A friend of mine made this point, and I think he was dead on the money, which is that the rule is designed to keep double A schools from moving to single A.....not to send single A schools down to double A.

This is correct. The BCS conferences need us for opponents and we need them for paydays. That's just the reality.

Sure, they can schedule a 1AA school for their OOC games if they want, but eventually their season ticket holders will step up and say "enough, I'm not paying $60 a seat to watch Florida A&M every year, when I can get a good instate 1A team." Same for schools like UM playing WMU and Illinois playing NIU.

If I read the article right, if you don't meet the requirement next year they send you a letter saying so. But then give you 10 years to get attendance up without any real penalty. Then after 10 years if requirement not met, you become a restricted member and must meet the requirement the following year. So they really give you 12 years to get your attendance in order. You are given a lot of opportunity to correct it.

It's not that lax.

My understanding of that article is if we get it over 15,000 this year -- and we will, without a doubt -- the NCAA will leave us alone.

If we don't, then we would have to hit our mark for the next ten years in a row or risk getting run out of I-A -- maybe not *that* tough, but something like it.

I'm not that worried about this. We won't be talking about this as much next year either, because we will be secure.

Maureen has the 'attendance letter' story in today's Blade. She says: "The notice states the school will have to meet the mark over the next 10 years or be placed on restricted membership, which takes the team out of contention for bowl games."

When I first read it, I saw it as Spart did. You have ten years to hit the mark once. But after seeing Schade's view, I can see how you could read it as having to make the mark every year for the next 10 years. I don't know which is correct. My guess is the NCAA made it intentional ambiguous so they can enforce it in what ever manner they see fit.

If it ever gets to that point for any school, expect to see legal challenges. 71 people is nothing for us. The bottom line is that, barring a drastic Blackney-type nosedrive over a multi-year period, we've got nothing to worry about. The Wisconsin game alone will catapult us this year during a supposed rebuilding time for the program.

The Blade article had some snippy comments from Rick Chryst about marketing plans, but he convienently failed to mention the role his conference's asinine scheduling practices (BG/Ohio game when BG students are on break) play in contributing to these numbers.

I hope that all the so called fans who say they didn't go to the games because we didn't play anyone or that it was too cold are really proud of themselves!!

Part of this lies on the AD and commis of the MAC...I mean, it's them who think playing a mid week game on ESPNU is so only ten people can watch it is more important than keeping them on Saturdays so that more people can make it. It is sad that there are 6 MAC team in Ohio, and that it is the closest conference, yet can't gt 15 K to the games but when you play so many games on weeknights, its tough to get people there. even major schools have problems on weeknights...they might be packed to start the game but unless it is a great game, there will be tons of empty seats by the fourth quarter.
