I don't like the 'bend but don't break' mentality

Reading the re-cap, box score, and quotes from the game on bgsufalcons.com I see that we are accepting the bend but don't break mentality. Burkes talked about it and so did Coach Brandon, talking about the only stat that matters is scoring defense. I hate that mentality. That may work against CMU, this year, but it won't work against them in years to come. They have a great new coach and they will be good in teh future. It won't work against Toledo or Marshall either. Does anyone else feel like me? I know you can't get a 3 and out everytime, but what's wrong with having that mentality? That's too soft, we need to be better than that to take it to the next level.

I heard Coach Brandon say that on the post-game, too. Clearly, scoring defense is important--after all, its points that win the game.

John Wooden used to talk about this. He would say, if the score is all that matters, then don't watch the game. Just stare at the scoreboard, if that's all you need to know to find out if you were successful.

Of course, it isn't. Yes, its important to keep the other team off the scoreboard. And, if you have to give up yards, you can get away with it if they don't score. But there can be signs of trouble, too, and your point is right. Against better teams, they could run crazy on us. (Did I hear Todd and Gibby make this point during the broadcast, too?)

Don't get me wrong. We went on the road and picked up any easy win, one that wasn't in doubt for most of the game, and all of the second half. That's a good thing, and NEVER a bad thing. But we have to keep working on our defensive performance, or Marshall and UT are going to light us up.

On the plus side, we did get a little pressure on the QB, even knocking him out of the game. Matt Leininger made a difference when he was in there, and Burkes had a good game.

I think those comments were more a case of the coach putting positive spin on things than anything else. I've heard him in other interviews (on more than one occasion) talk about the importance of getting teams to go three and out and that they count that as a turnover.

I'll take the win and be happy. Homecoming should be great next week. I thought I hreard coach Brandon mention on his TV show that they had sold 50 tents for the Meijer tailgate park. I might have heard him wrong because my daughter was trying to talk me into another bottle of milk before bedtime during that portion of the show (I didn't know that WBGU carried that show on Friday nights until I stumbled onto it last night)

We shut out the Bobcats 17-0 in 2001.

That was probably the last time we did it.

No, I was 12 years old and hadn't got completly hooked on falcon football yet, mainly cuz my dad was mostly a b-ball fan and we saw mostly falcon basketball games. So I didn't have a clue what was going on in '94 with falcon football. I did start listening to games on radio during the last few years of Blackneys reign.
