Big night for Omar

Post by MACMAN »

thursaday marks Omars last night of interviews so to speak with the steelers.
With the steelers reg season opener falling so close to the last preseason game most/many regu vet starters will see 0 game time. Batch is set to get the start and Ben will not play at all this game. Batch will be followed by Boyd at some point in the second QT and then Omar.

"Rookie Omar Jacobs and first-year free agent Shane Boyd will split most of the playing time against the Panthers in an attempt to determine if either is equipped to make the 53-man roster as the No. 3 quarterback. If not, the Steelers will consider the possibility signing a veteran quarterback, if they see one they like among the final cuts. Boyd is expected to replace Charlie Batch, who will start for Roethlisberger, sometime in the second quarter."

this seems to be the basic news story hitting the waves.
Some say it was decieded to let Boyd go first over Omar to see if he can pull anything together with with the second team, after last weeks disapoint perfromances by both QBs. It goes with out saying an INT or fumble or just playing with out any smarts and its over. for either or both QB's

items of note
Boyd who had two ints in the last ps game has keept that avg up, in practice scrimages avg 2 each session.

Winipeg is eyeing Omar for CFL....is it bad luck to have folks hoping you get cut...

Omar is being billed as much smarter QB than he lets on, the reality that no Pro O is eay to learn is being more widly accepted by the media. As well as the facts that Omar exemplifyed the perfect touch when tossing a TD in to the corner of the endzone, and again but the second time a now cut reciever did not manage to dop his feet in time to score. and two or three FG drives.

"The Pittsburgh Steelers have lost a couple of significant people off of their championship team including Chris Hope, Kimo von Oelhoffen and Antwaan Randle-El. While the team drafted well, rookies will not take the place of Randle-El or Hope. The Steelers will struggle to find replacements for each of these two players. Roethlisberger is slowly turning into a Tom Brady-like quarterback. He is 28-4 including playoff games in his two years as the Steelers starting quarterback. He is the face of the Steelers franchise. Roethlisberger should improve on his numbers from 2005 due to his knowledge of the offense. The quarterback situation is terrible behind Rothlisberger. Charlie Batch will be the backup and Omar Jacobs should be the third-string quarterback. If Roethlisberger were to go down for any significant amount of time, the Steelers would be in a world of hurt. The offensive line is as solid as they come with all five members starting all 16 games in 2004 and four of five starting all 16 games in 2005. The main question about the Steelers offense is the wide receiver depth behind Hines Ward. The Steelers drafted Santonio Holmes to be that No. 3 guy with either Quincy Morgan or Cedrick Wilson starting opposite Ward. This is one of the weaker receiver units in the NFL despite the play of Heath Miller, who I believe will turn into Roethlisberger’s favorite target this season. The running backs are also downgraded with the retirement of Jerome Bettis. There are reports out of camp that Duce Staley might not even make the team. Willie Parker will carry the load for this team, and both Verron Haynes and Cedric Humes will spell Parker if needed. Parker will be counted on to repeat his 1,200-yard season from 2005. The defensive line took a hit with the loss of von Oelhoffen. He was very strong against the run and will be replaced by Brett Keisel, who is not as good of a run stuffer. The core and the strength of this defense is the linebackers. Led by Joey Porter and James Farrior, this is one of the elite linebacker units in the NFL. Hope lead the Steelers in interceptions in 2005 and will be replaced by Ryan Clark. Clark might not be an ideal fit in this system, but playing next to Troy Polamalu will benefit him and make him look like a better player. The Steelers pass defense allowed one 300-yard passing game all season and should be just as good in 2006. Both Ike Taylor and Deshea Townsend are back, with Ricardo Colclough pushing Townsend for a starting job this year. Despite the losses of Hope and von Oelhoffen, the defense should be as solid as it was in 2005."

Although not fully healed, Jay Fiedler was cut by Tampa and I'm sure there are some others available. Omar really needs to put on a show tonight.

With the way the coaching staff has jerked Omar around, I'd amost wonder if a change of scenery isn't for the best at this point.

They didn't draft him to light up the 4th quarter of pre-season games with third and forth stringers.

They drafted him based on his immense potential, physically and otherwise, some of which he flashed while throwing 67 TD's and just 11 INT's in college, his best games coming against the best competition.

Omar was not going to step in and be as effective as others at "managing the game." What he offers is the chance for greatness down the road.

If they don't want that, it's their loss.

Guess you didn't read the part where the Steelers said they aren't going to mess with his throwing motion.

I believe he had a "haha" in the sentence. Doesn't that mean he was joking!

lol I like Omars shutput type delivery...it makes him lack some on the deep ball but Ill take his accuracy any day over the odd perfect deepball.

Yea, I hate the media...flatout buch of specualting sensationalizing fools...look at Toledo musslemen...the fool thinks if he copys enough of what others write it will make it true some how..f um all .

As for Omar I realy think and believe its his spot to loose, a good consistant Omar outing, with basic smart play and he keeps the 3rd spot. boyd just sucks, no way to put it more plainly, he plays like a scared fool, and throws an awfull ball, that is 9-10 times trying to beforced where it should not be and he never sees the open man. I duno know well just have to see, my guess is Pitt will release these guys who go quickly so they can focus on the first seasons game. my guess will be friday Sat at the latest.
