A Radical Idea

Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Given the present state of the punting unit, would it be possible for Anthony Turner, Freddie Barnes or someone with a rocket arm to take a deep shotgun snap on 4th and long situations and simply heave the ball high downfield 50-60 yards? I agree with others who say to simply go for it on 4th and short, but how about this for obvious punting situations where a change in field position is required?
Long interceptions are frequently said to be the equivalent of punts.
Given that we can't do anything out of that formation that doesn't result in a score against us or a massive net yardage gain for the opponent, is this a realistic (albiet embarassing) possibility?
It would be short term until the issues can be sorted out. It wouldn't reflect poorly on Rojas given the fact that the protection is the major issue, not him. Plus, it would give Turner and Barnes' arms the muscle memory of throwing the ball beyond 15 yards
Believe me, I can see the negatives that this could generate, but do we have an alternative at this point? I'll swallow the negatives so long as the special teams don't cost this talented offensive and defensive unit a game or an opportunity for a championship.

That plan, while with good intentions, would not work. The "punt returner" assuming they (or their coaches) have a brain, will jus tlet the ball hith the ground, resulting in a first and ten at the original line of scrimmage (thus no change in field position). Way to think outside the box though.

Even if the opposing team didn't just let the ball hit the ground, would you really want to risk anniahlating your QB's stats on something like that?? We would be the laughing stock of the entire NCAA if we tried that one.

I agree it's a radical idea, but the punting issues have been around for a lot longer than two games.

RADICAL would be revamping the rule book altogether so that regulation time plays out like overtime. All you need is a bigger scoreboard.

I see no problem throwing it for 45 yards on 3rd and long on the right spot on the field. Let them pick it, it's an incompletion, or we hit a big gain.
It's better than a run on 3rd and 9, IMHO

if we go for on every 4th down, the best things that happen are
he does not punt it back over his head,
it does not get blocked
the odds of the other team returning it for a td are much les
we ought just keep safe hands on the ball and deal with it...besides I would bet we could come with an interesting set of fourth down plays.

It was a guy from
Northern Colorado. UC has enough problems as it is without people mistakenly associating other program's problems with them.
