From The Journal News (Hamilton, OH)

This is from the "notebook" section of Pete Conrad, who cover Miami and the MAC for the Journal News. The two QB system is "working like a dream." Wow. I doubt if he's seen any BG games though.

OXFORD — The Bowling Green Falcons may be struggling on defense, allowing 36 points a game, but they're tied with Kent State and Ohio atop the Mid-American Conference East Division standings (all at 1-0) because their double-quarterback system is working like a dream.

Sophomore Anthony Turner, a former standout at Dayton Chaminade-Julienne, has passed for 389 yards and rushed for 186. Redshirt freshman Freddie Barnes, from Chicago, has passed for 149 and rushed for 377 and in last weekend's 33-28 win at Florida International he ran for a touchdown, passed for one and caught a TD pass.

Falcons coach Gregg Brandon might not have the luxury of having Turner and Barnes both on hand, however, when they face Kent State Saturday.

Turner was forced to leave the last game in the third quarter when he injured his non-throwing arm.

"He is day to day," Brandon said. "He separated it when he hit the ground, and I don't know exactly what grade it is, because they have different grades on how bad."

Broncos busting loose

The other MAC team which has won two in a row is Western Michigan. The Broncos surprised Toledo 31-10 and then won last week at Virginia 17-10.

Western Michigan, which will play at home Saturday night against Temple, is getting it done with an offensive defense.

Against WMU, sophomore cornerback Londen Fryar returned an interception 92 yards for a touchdown.

Last week, junior strong safety Anthony Gebhart ran back an interception 34 yards for a touchdown.

I highly doubt he has seen a game, our D is what has kept us in games after all of our great ST plays.

I have seen other boards/web sites (CFN for one) talking about how our defense has struggled. That has to come from someone who is too lazy to do some checking. If you take away the 4 special teams TDs, and the OT points (because the game wouldn't have gone to OT if not for the special teams issues), our defense in reality has actually only given up 20.6 points per game. That would be third best in the MAC. So in a macro level, yes, we have given up our share of points. But on the micro level, it is NOT because of defensive problems per se.

Well put, Warthog. Add in a Wisky score (and one to Buffalo, I think?) where the defense was faced with a ridiculously short field, and your point is made somewhat stronger.

I wouldn't exactly say it's worked like a dream, either.

You guys are spot on. But I'm very tickled to read something, anything, even if it is superficial, about the Falcons in my hometown paper.

Go BG!
