A question or two...

After finishing some grocery shopping at Giant Falcon tonight, driving home a couple questions hit me about our offensive scheme at the moment.

One, where the heck has Winny been? If we want to run the ball so badly, why not sent this 6'3" 260 pound battering ram up the middle? Am I missing something? When Winny has gotten the ball, he's done well. 6 carries for 58 yards, a 9.7 yard average every time he touches the ball. Instead of getting AT whacked, give the ball to Winny and the other backs.

Two, why the heck are we not throwing to O'Drobinak? At 6'4", 270lbs, not many DB's will be able to stop him in the open field. We simply must get these two involved in the offense as much as possible.

Any thoughts?

Freak, you are right on brother. I said it four days ago that Winovich looked good running the ball, but he didn't even line up in the backfield against Kent. What's up with that? And O'Drob is one of the few proven receivers we have, so are we not getting him the ball? He did get dinged up Saturday, but toughed it out and played the whole game.

There's not much time to get the ball to other weapons when you choose to run your QBs 40+ times a game. Every single facet of our offense except for the designed QB run is underutilized at this point. There's no other way to say it.

My thoughts? You're dead on. Winnovich, especially, needs to get many more touches. He has been spectacular in the few times he has carried the ball this year.

And, we have a very, very good TE in O'Drobinak. We have been beat enough by quick tosses to TE's over the past couple of years for anyone to know that we would really open up our passing attack, and it might provide a more reliable short option for our young QB's than the outside screen that we seem determined to run into the ground this year.

That's another point I was going to make. Our offense has become so predictable because we don't use these guys. You gotta get more guys involved and then some of those QB dives will be more effective.

And think of it this way - especially with our young recievers, if you, as a coach, show such a lack of confidence in them that you choose not to throw the ball and sacrifice your quarterback on 60% of offensive plays, then they are never going to gain any kind of confidence. Long term, this can only retard the development of some very talented young men on our team, in my opinion.

If we were losing games by trying to utilize all of the players on the field and give everyone a chance, I probably wouldn't be as upset and enraged as I am watching this predictable run-the-QB-up-the-middle crap now. Because this is college football, this is about developing these kids. I really don't think that the offensive scheme that we have seen over the first four games is developing anything besides sore shoulders for our quarterbacks. It is hard to know why our offense has been so blatently retarded this year (and I use that word in it's mechanical sense), but I can't think of any kind of a reasonable explanation for it. The best I can come up with is that the coaching staff is afraid of their recruiting being exposed by these kids potentially performing poorly. I can only pray that this is not the case.

And that, Matt, is why I'm so upset with how this year is playing out. At this rate, we're going to end up taking our lumps, but not getting any better as a team. So far, we've been getting worse all season (excluding the ST anomaly against Buffalo). I really don't care if we lose every game left on the schedule, if we do it while looking interested and progressing as a team.
