Jacobs Compares To Other Top MAC Soph QBs
Falcon signal caller ranks favorably with Leftwich, Gradkowski

Oct. 14, 2004

Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University sophomore quarterback Omar Jacobs (Delray Beach, Fla.) has erased any doubt about whether or not the Falcon offense would miss a beat following the graduation of All-American Josh Harris (now with the Baltimore Ravens).

Jacobs (6-4, 224), who is in his first year as the Falcons' starting signal caller is second in the nation in total offense (341.6), third in points responsible for (19.2) and eighth in passing efficiency (159.5). All three totals are the highest for any sophomore quarterback in the country. Two other highly recognized MAC quarterbacks, former Marshall QB Byron Leftwich and current Toledo signal caller Bruce Gradkowski , also began their careers as starters as redshirt sophomores.

Through five games as a first-year sophomore starter.

A-C-I Pct. TD YDS Effic.
Omar Jacobs (2004) 188-129-2 68.6 14 1,532 159.5
Bruce Gradkowski (2003) 175-122-2 69.7 11 1,237 147.5
Byron Leftwich (2000) 182-107-6 58.8 10 1,327 131.6

Hmmm....seems to me Omar's doing fine!

I agree with kdog27.......

Omar only throwing 2 ints so far in the season is amazing. We are lucky to have him.

That's good company! Good find Freak. In my mind Byron Leftwich is the gold standard by which all QBs should be measured in college. I don't think I have ever seen a QB that combined arm strength, accuracy, touch, toughness, and leadership as well as him.

The fact that he fell all the way to #9 in the draft was a slap in the face.

The closest I can think of is Dorsey.

Now b4 the flames start, that guy was that Miami team. Larry was a figurehead, and Ken was the QB and coach. He was a real leader for that team. but Leftwich has him trumped in skill by a substantial margin.

I've heard more than one scout say that Leftwhich throws the most accurate deep ball in the NFL or anywhere else. I wish the Lions had drafted him...

Dorsey was a great leader & winner. However, he couldn't match Byron's physical attributes, hence he dropped in the draft.

Byron Leftwich was just every thing you would ever put in a QB. The only possible knock on him is that he isn't the most mobile guy, but with his arm who cares?

I think you're right hammb. Leftwich is the guy all other MAC qb's are measured in college. Pennington was a great college QB but Leftwich just has it all!

Charlie is more mobile than Leftwich and posseses all of the same leadership & toughness as Byron. What is often forgotten is that Charlie was everybit as hurt as Leftwich was in that shootout a couple years ago (the one where the OL carried Byron down the field). He was banged up and could barely move as well, but he still was out there matching Leftwich yard for yard.

In all Frye is more mobile, but doesn't have quite the same arm as Leftwich. He also isn't as patient in the pocket to deliver the perfect ball. Of course when you can make yards on your own like he can why stay in and try to make the throw?

I know some on this board love to pile on Charlie Frye, but that kid is a one helluva QB. If anyone was going to garner Heisman talk this season in the MAC I thought it would be Frye. Of course not even a super talent like him can overcome the lack of talent around him, especially not as he learns a new system that is ill suited for the talent around him. Like it or not, I just recently saw an updated draft publication that had him in the #26 slot for draft prospects this year. That would still make him a first round pick (especially considering QBs always go a few notches higher than their draft grade should rate).

I am just not sold that he is good enough to be a first round pick. I hope that I am wrong as I love to see former MAC players make it in the NFL. He does have a huge lack of talent at Akron but to me it seems like that it should be made up somewhat by his own talent. He should make the players around him a lot better and especially against MAC competition. I have never seen him actually play in person so I am by no means a good judge of how good he is. I have only seen in limited amounts on television and analyzing his stats. I hope you're right Hammb, but if you are right and he is that good, Akron is one awful team

With all the talk of Frye and the draft, I just have to say that after every week watching Roethlisberger do well for the Steelers, I get more and more @#$%##%^&*%#$ mad about the Browns passing him up. :x  :duh:
