COLUMBUS, OHIO — The Columbus Destroyers have signed wide receiver/linebacker Steve Sanders, wide receiver/defensive back Cole Magner, fullback/linebacker Brian Thornburg, offensive/defensive lineman Will Rabatin and offensive/defensive lineman Chad Ruffin, Head Coach Doug Kay announced today. Monday marked the first day of the Arena Football League’s free agency signing period.

Sanders (6-3, 201, Bowling Green) will enter his rookie campaign in the AFL in 2007. The East H.S. (Cleveland, Ohio) product played four seasons with the Falcons from 2002-05. He caught 156 passes for 2,324 yards and 24 touchdowns in 49 games played. The wide receiver also rushed eight times for 82 yards and one touchdown. After signing with the Cleveland Browns in April and participating in the club’s rookie camp in May, he was released during training camp.

Magner (6-2, 196, Bowling Green) played in two preseason games with the Atlanta Falcons in 2005. The Palmer, Alaska native played for the Falcons from 2001-04 and caught 215 passes for 2,385 yards and 18 touchdowns. He carried the ball 57 times for 282 yards and two touchdowns.

In 2003, Magner and Sanders played with current Destroyers quarterback Josh Harris during one of Bowling Green’s best football seasons to date. The Falcons posted a record of 11-3, including a 28-24 win over Northwestern in the Motor City Bowl.

That came across my Google news and I just had to smile big. How fun will it be to watch that trio together again?!

Yeah, I'd consider Destroyer season tickets if I lived even remotely in the area. It would be very fun indeed to watch those three again.

That thought reminded me of a SE Michigan Wolves (I think that is what they were called...) game I attended at Rogers high school with my dad in 1994 or 1995.

QB-Pat Guicardo
RB- LeRoy Smith
WR- Mark Sczlaechic

If those three are getting serious playing time, I will definitely have to catch several Destroyers games this year.

I'd definitely take the Freaklings down for a few games as well. Hell yeah.

He had a workout with the Tenn. Titans recently. However, he did not get signed. I'd imagine he and his agent are shopping around and you might see him head North of the border.

The AFL is boring ass football. Too much entertainment, too little football. But it is good to see Sanders and Magner signed. Of course, Josh Harris signed last year, but once he signed with the Giants, wasn't able to play in the AFL because of the agreement between the two leagues. In a way it would be great to see Sanders and Magner get signed by an NFL team, assigned to play in Europe, come back to an NFL training camp and make the squad. But the more playing time they get the better.

I heard from a friend of mine who watches arena football once in while (crazy, isnt it?) and he said Josh Harris is actually one of the better QB's. I'm pretty sure he said he starts.

Josh Harris has yet to play in any arena football game.
