*Delusional bouts of irrational, lamentable braggadocio that afflict supporters of the institution with more resources.
*Distinction between low, mid and high BCS classified institutions (some carryover from Underscheduling 100).

So are you saying we should never schedule schools like OSU, Michigan, and Oklahoma because they have far more resources then we do? Or are you alluding that we do not belong on the same field with schools haveing such superior resources?

Joe, you are way off base on this one. First, this game never happens if the NCAA doesn't move to the 12 game schedule. Since out of conference games are set up years in advance, EVERY school was left scrambling this year to get that 12th game to fit into the schedule.
Second, as Brandon eluded to in some of his comments, games like this are what help the athletic department at BG attmept to balance the budget. We are getting $650,000 for this game. I would venture to say that we could play an entire season of home games and not make that much.
Third, and I was just thinking about this one this morning, I think this is a great time for us to play Ohio State. Our two-deep is loaded with redshirt and true freshman. This gives them a chance to play against one of the best programs in the country and helps them set a goal for where they can take this team. This is a great motivational game. These kids get to learn in a game against the best. They can take this experience, grow and learn from this, to make themselves better for the next three + seasons at BG. We have a young team with nothing to lose. Let them find out where they stand and what they need to improve.

Warthog: Thanks for at least attempting to understand the basis of the post. A couple points:Warthog wrote:Joe, you are way off base on this one. 1) Everyone was scrambling, but only one team managed to play the #1 team in the country on the road smack dab in the middle of the season. I'd like to think there would be better alternatives.
2) Comprable financial payouts could be garnered from other schools with a higher probability of winning. For example, Penn State, who's in a rebuilding mode this year yet plays in a 100,000+ seat facility and would be able to fund a similar figure.
3) I buy that there's "nothing to lose" on paper. We're the underdog, no doubt. What is at stake, I fear, is the fragile confidence of a very, very young team heading into conference play.
4) For Mr. Lyons and anyone else who misinterpreted the meaning and intention of my post with equal severity, nowhere did I say BG should *never* schedule Ohio State or that "we don't belong on the same field" as them. My opinion is the opposite of that. The idea is to play these games at slightly more opportune times (say, Ohio State in 2003) when the dyanmics are in play for a competitive outcome, not trying to bang your head against the wall with a bunch of freshmen before the most important games of the season.

I think the schedule makers would have a hard time predicting what year which powerhouse will be re-building and thus more vulnerable.
Will OSU or Michigan be rebuilding in two years or four years or six years? It's impossible to say but schedules are made so far in advance you really don't know what you're getting when you make them.
Like the 'rassler says, "to be the best, you gotta beat the best." I'd like to think we're trying to be the best.
And if going into the horseshoe as a 34 pt dog and getting beat destroys your confidence and your season, then the team is way too fragile to begin with.
Also, I think it's great OSU is playing us and other in-state schools. They have nothing to gain from those games. The OSU hoops coach before Matta (O'Brien) said he hated in-state games for that reason and would do everything he could to eliminate them. At least Cheaty McSweatervest is playing in-state schools.
