Good, Bad, Weather, Attendance, Sorry

Post by BGSU33 »

Good: Another nice win for BG. The Falcons jumped all over Ball State early and often and put the game away pretty quickly.

Bad: NIU and UT both won.

Weather: Man, what a crappy type of a day. The wind was crazy, even for a day in Bowling Green. Then, after pretty much holding off all day, the rain starts coming down sideways shortly after kickoff, then pretty much turned to sleet, and the stadium started to empty out after just one quarter of play. I couldn't believe how empty the stadium was after halftime. I wish more people could have stuck it out.

Attendance: Under 17,000? I thought we had more than that. The West side was almost full and there were a decent number of people on the East and in the end zones. The parking lots around the stadium appeared very crowded with people tailgating too. But like I said above, everyone disappeared very early on. I know the first quarter was pretty much the game, but the guys deserved to play in front of more people than what stuck it out. I saw way too many people in just sweatshirts and that wasn't going to cut it in today's weather. I know it was mid-October, but it felt more like mid-December. I was sitting on the East side and my cheeks are just windburnt.

Sorry: I was at the game, I came up from Virginia and was hoping to stop by the AZZ area during the pregame. However, we got very delayed by waiting for some family members and ended up getting a much later start than expected on the day, plus I had to make a stop at the bookstore to pick up some BG gear. Hopefully, I will get a chance to meet most of you soon at another event.

Yeah the weather kinda sucked. I was sitting in the student section 3 rows from the front on the 20 yard line on the side closest to the band. 5 girls sitting in front of us left right after the kickoff because of the rain. And that wasn't even the worst of the weather then. I was tempted to leave after halftime because I was losing feeling in my toes, but the girl driving wanted to stay the whole game. I'm glad we did. My friends and I had so much fun talking to both the old and new Freddie and Frieda's! Frieda even took my shoe off in the 4th quarter and threw it in the stands!

I wasn't as cold as other people were though. I had on a long sleeved shirt, and BG sweatshirt, my winter jacket, and a fleece blanket. But, I was still cold.

Oh well, it was a good win! GO BG!!! :D
Can't wait until next week at OU!

Yeah, our worst enemy when it comes to attedance can boil right down to one thing - the weather. Like it or not, we do not have a rain or shine fan base. The weather sucked. I have been watching it for the last 10-days and just had a feeling it was not going to be a nice day. I was hoping all the forecasts would be wrong, but every day that passed, it's pretty much held up to be a poor day on Saturday. Hopefully, the weather for our last three at home will all be better than this day today.

I am guilty of leaving after the 3rd quarter, but I will be making my second OU trip of the year nest week to make up for it. It seemed like the rain might hold off while we were tailgating, the sun did make an appearance, but it seemed to start raining at the beginning of each quarter.

Boy was that miserable. Just a very cold day -- for me it was worse than 2002 vs. EMU just because things got pretty boring towards the end and there weren't as many people left to have fun with and to block the wind.

My favorite moment was looking up at the clock and seeing just 6 minutes left...and then the 4th quarter could start.

karabear - I think i must have been sitting either right behind you or a few people down. I was the dude with the varsity jacket telling knock-knock jokes to the birds.

I must say our new band uniforms are not as warm as the old ones! The raincoats are warmer but the rain and wind seemed to be coming right for us the whole game. I am really upset that so many people left so early in the game but hey, that's the normal fair weathered BG fan syndrome I guess. I remember looking at the clock with 9:30 left i the 4th and realizing the band had the biggest section left in the stands. I don't care how cold it is, this is football weather and I was upset to see the lack of support from all the fans. But just think, BG will only get colder as the season goes on and if everyone is leaving after the first half now, the crowds for future games could be even smaller!!!

We left after the third. We were prepared to leave in the second, but it got a little better and in fact was a little nicer in the third. We were dressed warm. It was OK except when it rained and sleeted.

Maybe we should consult with the geography department on methods for destroying the ozone layer near BG. A little localized global warming would do wonders for attendance. Just be sure to wear a lot of sunscreen

We left w/ about 6:00 to go in the game. We just missed the long kickoff return. I'm sorry, but it was BORING. I can handle the cold, had it been a respectable game I would've gladly stuck it out. Unfortunately our home schedule this year SUCKS.

People said we were on pace for a record attendance average this year, and I still believe that our home schedule will ensure we won't get that record. The MAC is awful this year, and we got the worst teams in it at home :(

Everyone seems to agree that we have a good deal of "die hard" support, but we need to get the more casual fans out. How do you expect to get casual fans out to the Doyt in sub 30 degree wind chills, w/ sleet, to watch a game that is basically over at the end of the first quarter!? Its not gonna happen, I'm sorry. The bane of playing in the MAC is that there are only about 4-5 teams in the entire conference that can be competitive with each other. The rest are all patsies. People won't be coming out on poor weather days to watch BG beat up on a scrub team. No offense to the fans of some of those schools, but there is a reason why so many of them are in the ESPN Bottom 10...they belong there!

Yeah the weather sucked but c'mon stick it out. What disturbed me even more than weak attendance was the atmosphere of the crowd. Yeah it may have been a blow out but shows some enthusiasm for this team. Instead I had to listen to a group of 5 guys in front of me debate why OSU won't win a game in the Big 10 this year. WHEN AT THE DOYT IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE ALL ABOUT BGSU!!!

My wife and three year-old high tailed it out to the truck in the early part of the second qtr when the wind/sleet and rain kicked up. The east side stands were just brutal. I went back into watch the game from the south end zone. Unfortuantely, my wife didn't think I meant that I was going to actually WATCH the game. By the time we met up in the 4 qtr, she was none to happy.

Thankfully, I needed to hit the Giant Eagle on the way home for milk. Thier floral arrangements are pretty nice for a supermarket

Thats just the nature of things around here weather wise. There is a reason why we now have four windmills generating electricity west of town. We're like Chicago's little brother and its not going to end soon. So guys, dress appropiately for the rest of the season, its not going to get any warmer. Bring your blankets and your wool socks or your hand warmers and just get to the game!!! :prayer: :!: :!: :!:

Well said, Hammb. I would have gladly stayed (and have) for exciting games. But this one was over very early. Its just realistic.

Ed and I were among the few fans that stayed till the end of the game. I felt like if the players had to play in tht kind of weather than the least I could do was stay until the end of the game. After the game we waited for some of the players to come out so we could congratulate them on a great win.
