Yes, we are psyched about this weekend!

Interesting story about playing with pride and intensity, Karl. We have been struggling with that with our entire team (7th graders) this year. We really got into the kids about it last week in practice. Sunday they went out and played their best game of the year against the best team in our division. We still lost but we were proud of these kids and told them that after the game.

Then I find this out. Some time in the third quarter, after we were down by two touchdowns, one of the kids was trying to keep the enthusiasm up in the huddle and said something like "C'mon guys, this game isn't over." Then the best player on the team says "Yes it is. WE SUCK." How do you deal with that kind of attitude from one of the leaders of the team?

Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard

He made the comment some time in the third quarter but I didn't hear about it until after the game. But as it turns out, the kid's dad actually had told me to take him out because he wasn't playing hard enough. So I did. I'm the defensive coach, so the kid actually didn't play defense for most of the fourth quarter.

Good Article '87. Have a safe trip to BG. Nicholas has a game Saturday afternoon against cross-town rival Carroll, so we are missing all BG home games this year.

There a few players that say comments like that occassionally on Nick's team..... even though they are 5-1 and have outscored their opponents 130-44. I just tell Nicholas that the best players are not necessarily the team leaders. Actions speak louder than words....... Nicholas is a quiet kid.... ask PGY.

In their only loss (a "B" game), Nicholas started at DB (he is first string WR and second string DB) and caused a fumble (from their "star") on the first play from scrimmage. On their second possession, they ran on the other side away from Nicholas. He tracked their "star" down 40 yards and damn near dragged him down. Nicholas caught him at about the 5 yd. line. The rest of the defense had stopped pursuit and the kid (nearly 40 lbs heavier and bigger than Nick) finally dragged Nicholas about 4 yards and shook Nick off to score. Nicholas played DB the entire first quarter and they never ran the ball to his side again.

You just hope the coachs noticed the hard work and strong effort of working-class players like Nicholas. They certainly went spaz on the fumble - which we recovered. It was a great hit. Nicholas had a huge smile on his face, but no jumping up and down and primping about the hit. Just business as ususal. And man was he pissed about not stopping the TD. He studied the DB's all night at the Miami-NUI game.
