I have to say it, it bothers me...SEBO

Post by MACMAN »

Ok its been eating at me none stop for about 6 weeks, now. At first the fact that sebo was going built with out stadium seating was just odd.
Now I have got to say what were they thinking? Adding on to a stadium, that for some games is short seats "ie moving Toledo up early in the season would also help this number" and when having more seating would be better for home at home series options with larger school. Not mention a chance to realy up date some ofthe stadium (the metal blechers for soild construction)
every time I see this construction I shake my head...a chance passed up to realy enhance the doyt...it would be akin to building anew ice area with less seating. there are issues here.

There will be seating on the front of the SEBO. The seating will be reserved for the Falcon Marching Band. This will free up their current seating for students. And in my opinion moving the Toledo game from the end of the season provides a total let down at the end. Why not play them that late?

Putting extra student or general seating on the Sebo Center wouldn't make much sense to me. We've had one huge crowd in the last 5 years at the Doyt, extra seats would just make the stadium seem more empty, as harsh as that seems. We're in pace to average about 14,500 minus the Wisky game, so I dunno...I'm glad it's being built, it'll help add more character to the Doyt and will certainly help our recruitment potential.

As Journey stated, the seating that will be placed in front of the SEBO Center was paid for with money with specific instructions that it be for the FMB use only. Aside from the need for more seating, if the university feels that it is ever necessary to add more seats to the Doyt, they have the entire South endzone that they could add seats to. Granted that would give the Doyt more of a "Horseshoe-type" feel to it, but hey it'll make the Doyt louder than ever, plus it'll help keep the wind down that "howls" across the field from time to time. Also, if I'm not mistaken, the Doyt was built with the idea that a second level of seats could be built on top. Can anyone clarify that for me? I'm sure the University has thought of the possible need for more seats, but I do know what you mean MACMAN about the possible chance for seating there. The way I feel about it is that, if the Doyt ever does get to the point where we sell-out every single game including games against D-1AA teams, then we should worry about seating issues. In the mean time, just think about how the Doyt will look when the SEBO Center is done and complete!

Right now, the last thing this program needs to worry about is adding seats to the Doyt.

It's true. The original drawings for the Doyt anticipated the ability to expand to about 50,000 seats, including a small second tier of seating along each sideline and bowls that fill in the end zones.

The theory of reducing seating was to artificially stimulate demand -- much in the same way that major league teams in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit and Pittsburgh have all invested in smaller stadiums.

My hope is that we can grow the program to the point where most games are sold out in this smaller setting. If we can ever get to that point, then I guess I'd like to see us add one of those second tiers along the sideline -- with, perhaps, a revamp/expansion of luxury seating.

Incidentally, those would be some great seats. I like sitting near the top as it is; I find it is a better view.

I'm not sure what to do with south end zone. But we don't need more seating. Maybe that's where a new basketball arena should go -- with a Falcon Club zone and a video board built in.

My only concern/complaint/confusion with the SEBO is why was it built in the North endzone, rather than the South? If this will truly be "the new front door" to Perry Stadium, wouldn't it make more sense to showcase it to Wooster Street and the I-75 overpass?

I havent made thaaaat much of a fuss about it because I would guess that those in charge know what lies ahead for the rest of the stadium.

Oh how I wish they would have countersunk the stadium to cut down on the wind, give better sightlines, and have the opportunity for berm style seating in the endzones. . .

Thoughts on moving the Toledo Game
1. having the game early on in the season would draw more people, esp your more Fair Weather Fans,
2. the game would not be near a break when again Fair weather Students would be cuting for home.
3. By playing Toledo early...and suposing we both made it to the macc the games would be right on top of each other
4. By playing the late people feel the season comes to that game...i dont, nor do some of the more known conferences who play big games early.

Early is just good in my book...I think this would be a great family day game, or even homecoming.

But I think the point of playing Toledo late is that it is a guaranteed sell-out or near-sell out. So if it's going to sell out anyway, why not play it late in the season when the fair-weather fans aren't going to be there. If they truly are fair-weather fans, they will be at the early games and that will increase our attendance.

I mean, who should we play late in the season? Temple? Buffalo? Those teams + cold weather = no one but die hards in the seats

I firmly agree with these two statements. It does suck if we were to play them twice in a row. And when we're both playing well, it does seem like the season comes down to that game. But I have two points on this.

1. The Toledo-BG game this year probably won't be for anything more than bragging rights.

2. There's a reason why tOSU and Michigan play in one of the last games of the season. It's a big game to begin with, and this year, probably an even bigger game.

But see, we did 14,000+ against 0-3 EMU for homecoming. That's a good total for us (not great) so it will help in the 15,000 category. If we played Toledo for homecoming and sold out, then played EMU on a Tuesday or Wednesday night in November, we'd have hardly anyone attend and that would hurt attendance for the year. This way we get two games with 10,000+ instead of one.

I think things are good the way they are.

What I am about to say, I have no "inside word" that I have received, but I still think they are going to put the convocation center in the south end zone

Having a convocation center down there would be sweet. Don't build it right next to the stadium though. If it were to have a little walking distance b/w it and the Doyt, hten some amazing landscaping and cosmetics could be done with that, like say perhaps a long sidewalk with the much needed Doyt Perry statue in the middle of it much like our campus seal in the middle of campus.

I might be slightly liberating an idea from a certain school just south of us here, but the band's pre-game show could be moved over to that location before games and instead of the walk in that the team has right now they could stop in at the beginning of that show, Brandon could address the crowd, and then the team could be on their way to the stadium where they would have to wlak right past that statue (who knows what kind of tradition might start with a walk like that i.e. rubbing his feet for good luck, only walking to the right side of the statue so on and so forth).

Then after the band's show ended we could actually have a fantastic way to enter the stadium like we should. Imagine the FMB coming straight down that beautiful walk way and into the stadium...

So many AMZINGLY great things could be done around here, I just hope that some of that potential is realized and very soon!

DD, I have had the same thoughts since the begining as well. I hope what transfer said about a Convo Center south of the stadium is true. Then it would make more sense.

They still haven't built that freeway exit off of Poe Rd. like they have planned there, how do you expect them to ever finish the Sebo Center?

Leave the BG/UT game for the last week of the season. I like it much better then than halfway thru the season. Maybe it's only for bragging rights this year...more often than not, it will be for much more.

Regardless of records, the BG/UT is the game to watch every single year it seems. It should be kept where it has been the last couple of years on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving Break where it has the best chance of students and alumni to be there as well as receive National Attention. Yea, I know there's the whole deal where just about everyone on campus going home, but hey that's their fault if they miss a good game!! 8)
