Recruits at the BSU game/ Impressed?

Post by Class of 61 »

I for one like to "look over" the recruits that come in for our home games. Since they are seated in the first 5-6 rows behind the team at the 45-35 yd. lines, they're usually pretty visible.
I especially like to see the various letter jackets on display and was pleased to see an AKRON HOBAN jacket with the player's name "Glaser". Upon reading the article in the PD on the Hoban game where Tyrell Sutton broke the all-time Ohio rushing record, a quote was attributed to Tackle Shawn Glaser, a 6-8, 305 lb Senior.... While the kid didn't appear quite that big in street clothes, I was happy to see we're again recruiting kids from traditional strong programs.

Only one possible complaint, and it's already been addressed by the attendance thread.... would our lack of a crowd "turn off" recruits from major hs programs who already play in front of some pretty large crowds? Iggy and St. Ed's, for example, played Sat. Nite in front of 13,100 at Parma's Byers Field.
I wonder which game becomes our "premiere" recruiting game? I would think it would be the Marshall game this year, because of the quality of the opponent, as opposed to just blasting a team like BSU on Saturday.
Anyone else have thoughts on this issue? :?

This kid above walked past the band while I happened to be down on the ground instead of in the stands. He is definitely 6'7 or 6'8 because he had me by a few inches. It's odd that you brought him up because he is the only recruit I really saw all night. I just remember the Akron Hoban and Glaser on the back and thought to myself that I have never heard of Akron Hoban Glaser HS. Now it all makes sense!!!

61, super recruit group in onSaturday. Some high profile players. We also had a decent group in for the SEMO game. Sure, it would have been better to have played Homecoming on a 65 degree and sunny weekend (like the previous three or this weekend (!)), but we got horrible weather. Horrible.

The recruits, I am sure, were impressed with several things- primarily that we kicked another team's rear end all over the field on both sides of the ball, have an offense than any kid big or little wants to play in, have a wide open special teams package allowing kids to get on the field and chase/hit scheme on defense worth some pizazz. We also have obvious enthusiam on the sideline, caring/involved/intense coaches and a chance to play on TV a several times a year. We have a 7 million dollar state of the art (write that down) Student Athlete Center ready for these high school seniors' late sophomore year. The MAC will have three bowl tie ins next year.

We have a super support system in place with top academic help (introduce yourself to new Associate AD for Academics Shirelle Jackson- very impressive), the kids graduate and we have a university with every major you want except pure engineering. And the school itself is headed up. Oh yeah, and 58% of our students are women.

So yes, bring some more recruits for the WMU Family Weekend game. If we win the next two and the weather is decent, you will see 23,000 there. Win that one and welcome 26,000 for the Marshall game.

Hey players, why NOT come to BG? What a destination.

Go Falcons!

Nice post, FF1. Now, do you know something about the bowl tie-ins others might have missed, or is it your feeling that something will break for us somewhere?

I think its going on the assumption that this Toronto Bowl is going to happen (which all indications show that it will). So that makes GMAC, MCB and Toronto 3 bowl games the MAC can get into.

oandb, I am hearing Toronto is a very, very high probability. I suppose (somewhere) it was posted that the Toronto city council and mayor are all on board and serious negotiations for the Sky Dome and TV (the two remaining keys) are underway. Big East and MAC have given their tacit approval for participation in the game if it goes.

No title sponsor yet either but the game could be approved for next season without that- provided Sky Dome and TV are secured. With the backing of the very powerful local govt in Toronto, letters of credit etc. should be OK.

So, let's play.....say...Louisville in Toronto in 2005. Many call Toronto the most cosmopolitan city in North America. I call it chilly in December, but football starved (they love the Argos), a town with world class shopping, museums and hotels. And a darn good place for a MAC team to get a post season reward.

Go Falcons!
