Here are some more video clips. I finally got around to messing with these. Just in time to get us all fired up for some Falcon football this weekend. See you in Philly!

Watch out for this last one, it may cause some heated discussion.

Thanks for posting that. Since there was so much debate about it shortly after the game, I really wanted to see a video of it. I don't think I have ever seen a hit like that, where the defender is out of bounds and hits the QB as he is heading OOB. On the bright side, it looks like he wrapped him up and delivered a big hit. Definitely deserved a 15 yard penalty.

I don't know about that. It is strange that Smith was already standing out of bounds. But he didn't lower his shoulder, nor did he take a step into Everson. Smith took a step toward him, then stopped and they ran into each other. If that is all that happens, then I say its clean. But Smith did lift and put him down. That's probably what got him the penalty.

That is the play we used against Toledo a few years ago. I think it was Harris to Magner back to Harris for a TD.

That's what I was thinking. The severity of the hit is hard to determine in slo-mo like that.

Um, was smith even on the field during that play? Looked to me that he was standing oob and made the hit.

Also, he led with the head...probably could have/should have been ejected...

I'd have run him.

Looks like he was covering #82 (judging by the way he's looking toward OB right before Smith enters the picture)... and I don't think he led with his head in an illegal way at all.

I don't disagree that you have to make the call, but having said it, and going with the slo-mo (as I mentioned earlier) I don't think it doesn't look like the blatant assault it was described as originally.

See, I knew that video would spark some entertaining conversation.

Looks like the crown of his helmet is on Everson's chin in this shot while his arms are still on their way up to 'wrap up':

and can you see why I thought he was on the sidelines making some sort of Woody Hayes-Clemson/Phil Villapiano-Cal Bowl play?

I think it's borderline. While it appears Everson is heading oob, he still seems to have one foot in the field of play. Smith could of, and probably should, have held up....

Bone jarring hit at any rate.

Tricky,

That was the exact same play from the '03 UT game. The one difference I saw was Harris would run someone over while Barnes tries to juke the dude at the end.

Great play either way. CP's pass was right there and the Oline did their thing on the ride down.

i was standing on the sidelines doing camera work for this game and smith ran out of bounds to get off his blocker and when he made the commitment to hit everson, everson was still in bounds. he was coming at him diagnoly and ran out of bounds to get off his blocker thats why it looks like he came off the bench

OK, I'll take it that he was on the field, but the runner was obviously OOB and smith definately lead with the Head!

TG - I'm not sure what you were watching, but there was intent to injure on that play - bad thing, hitting somebody like that usually hurts the hitter more often than the hittie!

obviously headed OOB, actually. I didn't say Smith shouldn't have been flagged, I just don't think it was a foul that called for jail time like some argued when it happened. (NOTE NOTE NOTE: Not actual "jail time", but you know what I mean. I hope.)

As for "leading with the head", I take that to be "top of helmet leading perpendicular to the opponent's body". And chin hit helmet because his facemask hit Everson in the chest. If you were going to call "leading with the head" everytime a helmet touched a player before the arms were around the runners body, you'd have 15 yards marked off every other play.

It was a good flag because the QB was giving himself up stepping OB. But, if this happens 10 feet to Everson's right, we're all praising AS for another stud hit. Hell, the shot he laid on Stocco last year was probably more "leading with the head" than this one.

I don't think he lead with his head either. Kids are coached today to lead with your facemask. That way you keep your head up. To me, he just looks like he is in position to make a hit and the QB just happens to be directly in front of him when the hit is made. If Everson is off to either side a slight bit, Smith would have hit him with his shoulder, I would guess. I don't see any intent to injure, just intent to make a hit on an opponent that was carrying the ball.
