When the SAC is built and Perry Stadium ages.....
When the SAC is built and Perry Stadium ages.....
I think as they design the SAC, they should consider the long-term needs to improve the stadium. Specifically, I look at the points where the stadium area could be enhanced asthetically.
Examples:
At some point it will be neccesary to physically remove and replace the railings or flagpoles on the stadium. Design features of the SAC might be added at the time of construction, which could be matched later, with addition and changes on the stadium. This could create a visual flow that unites the two structures.
The SAC should be designed as a stand-alone building of course, and should look attractive and add to the area on its own. However, it wouldn't cost anything, to look forward to the future.
Beyond that, we face a long period of fundrasing for a convo center, and other things. So we are certain not to see an organized effort. But it doesn't hurt to discuss ways the general stadium area could be improved.
The roadway around the stadium, and the paved area under it, could be improved over time, to create a much smoother appearence.
Knocking down the concession booths and starting new might be nice. Adding removable TV monitors along the main concourse would let people feel more at-ease with leaving for food. That might help spread the flow of sales across the entire game, prevent long lines, etc.
Buy a pre-fab steel building, put it in someplace far away, and get the grounds crew out of the stadium.
Follow the suggestion of the University Master Plan, landscape and pave the football parking lots.
Pave some of the "tent city" pads, and improve the access to electricity.
Put a foot or two of topsoil around the stadium, and plant bushes. Its a possible safety issue, maybe, but worth it. Add some donor-sponsored park benches at various points in and around the stadium and tent city area.
Find a way to "finish" the backside of the scoreboard. It need not be overly fancy, but it needs to be done.
Mandate that some of these concession people make trips into the stands.
Add a seasonally removable "hall of fame" display, if nothing will be built in the SAC. Nothing that would blow over, but that would mounted to fixed points, and stored during the off-season. Something people at the game could walk through, browse while eating, between halves, before the game, etc. Granted, a HOF area/room might be pegged for the future convo center, but something ought to be there for football.
Convert the old weight room into the BGSU athletic archieves, or some other suitable space which isn't prone to leaking. Again, this too might be better suited for the convo center.
Mount football championship banners from the stadium pillars. It would help dress up the stadium and promote football heritage. It might also be fairly cheap to do.
Have our well-equiped fine arts department create some sports themed statues, not unlike what they tried at 5/3 Field in Toledo. Maybe put a bronze statue of Doyt Perry in the stadium, in the pose of that famous photo, kneeling with the football.
Get the dumpsters into their own little pens, so they aren't sitting in the middle of anyplace.
Mask the backside of the elevator towers so they don't stick up like sore thumbs. While they are at it, mask the A/C units now cooling the VIP boxes.
It might be an argument for another day, but much of this make me wonder if we might not be better suited to have the convo center in the south endzone area.

AMEN.
As an architect who has been involved in award-winning projects, it pains me to no end the lack of quality design at the University. The Union is great and is an anomoly.
Its time to hire big time names to do our sports facilities. I am talking HOK Sports and all the little off-shoot firms started by past HOK designers. They will act as the Sports Facility consultant to an Ohio firm. It should be required for all athetic work at the University.
Check out Miami's soon to be Ice House. It is going to make recruiting that much harder at BG.

You can also see the renovations to Yeager and the new softball facility.

I saw a few drawings a year ago and the added pictures just make the place look amazing. BG has some work to do...Hopefully the product on the ice will make recruits want to come to BG.

It might be of use if they had something akin to "shelter houses" at parks and such. Something that would provide a wind-proof, fully powered, illuminated, dry, and warm/warmer place for select groups to have pre-game gatherings. For certain sponsor groups, it could present a fixed location people would know to gather at each year. Such a structure could be anchor points for the tent city. The varsity letterman group, alumni association, etc seem logical picks for such things.
I could see such a structure being as simple as a fully paved cement base, with a upscale tent with real doors. Maybe add a fixed, standing building within the paved pad for storage, or other needs. Or it could be a full sized structure like you see at city parks and such. One could lead to another, and you could create a market for them by renting them out for a pretty penny. Likewise even paved tent pads, with the upscale kind of tents you see at major sporting events, could be sold annually to major donors and sponsors.

One thing we must NOT do is......
Tear down or remove the northendzone seating permently or build the SAC in a way that makes it impossible to expand and upgrade the north endzone seating. I think that would be dumbest thing we could do. I can't stand the way UT's Glass Bowl looks with that closed off endzone with that building in front of it. I dont' want us replicating the Glass Bowl's design in any way shape or form.
Mid-2000's Anderson Animal
I think the football parking looks horrible as you drive past it, either on I-75 or Wooster. I like the suggestions the master plan makes, with lots of grass and curves breaking up the sea of blacktop.
As for UT's glassbowl? I'm not worried that we would make their mistake. Consider that it is a much older design, which has no large area of glass overlooking the field, and a scoreboard hovering over it.
Every discussion I've heard indicates they want this place to really sell prospects and parents. I expect there will be a lot of glass overlooking the stadium. Lots of visual interaction with people in the stands.
What I'm more interested in, is knowing what they come up with, for the office space under the stadium.

From what I understand, the HoF is going to be moved to the lobby of the SAC permanently.NWLB wrote:Add a seasonally removable "hall of fame" display, if nothing will be built in the SAC. The last I read, which was last week, nothing has been set in stone, specifically including a HOF room.
Not that I don't expect something like it will happen anyway.
I'm just saying that on gameday, you either aren't going to want, or aren't going to be able to handle thousands of folks tromping through a HOF room. Better to have a weather resistent outdoor alternative, not to replace a HOF room, but to provide something for gamedays.
