I've been working my zen mojo since yesterday trying not to get overly worked up in response to yesterday's game, and I think I've been doing a pretty good job. A healthy dose of BEER last night certainly helped (though it made raking leaves today pretty friggin miserable ). I do not want to say anything negative, and I don't want to get involved in any of these futile pissing matches that have been breaking out lately. But, I must be blunt in this regard:

If you think we should drop from D1A to D1AA for any reason whatsoever, especially because of ONE LOSS, you, my friend, are an idiot, and I question your loyalty and your integrity.

I'm sure that all of this talk about 1AA since yesterday has been a byproduct of the most extreme frustration, but realize that this is not simply idle talk. What you are referencing would be one of the absolute worst things that could happen to our beloved University. Great, your frustrated. Take it out on the coaching staff, your pillow, or your dog. I don't care. Venting is healthy. But please do not take out your frustration on the ENTIRE FUTURE OF THE BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT. You know not what you do.

Challenge me if you must, but this is a fight that I am willing to participate in enthusiastically. Your words have consequences.

Not saying it should be done or even that I am a proponnent of dropping a division, but I think there are merits to competing for a National Championship. I also think that it is healthy to have the conversation about dropping to 1AA.

With the financial structure of major big time college athletics I have been open to the disucssion of dropping to 1AA for quite some time. I first started thinking about it in the mid 90s so this isn't because of one Temple loss.

I have thought about 1AA when adressing options for the athletic department. Along the lines of our athletic department having an identity crisis. For some time we were a football school, then a basketball school, then a hockey school. I have thought that schools our size get stretched too thin trying to be competative in many sports.

Here in Charleston the Citadel is 1AA and they manage to play some pretty good OOC games- at Texas A&M this season and they were leading @Florida State last season. Their tailgating scene blows ours out of the water. Their facility is very nice, holds 20,000+. They are currently 3-5 and averaging 13,875 fans per game.

And they just put in a new scorebard which is very, very cool and is low, right behind the goalposts, probably where ours should be:

But the biggest attraction for fans on both sides was the new Daktronics scoreboard which, to date, is the largest scoreboard in the state of South Carolina. Featuring a huge videoboard that can display replays, live action and more, the scoreboard is the width of the field’s playing surface.

Included in the scoreboard – in addition to the standard information – are updated rushing and passing statistics for both teams and a sound system which is perhaps the finest of any outdoor venue in the South Carolina Lowcountry.

I dont'/ think we need to jump off of Jerome Library because of this loss. THis loss was not worse than the Buffalo loss in 2000. This loss is goofy because of the state of this team and program. We have had recent success. We have recruited some of our best athletes, players ever but we just aren't all on the same page.

We'll see what happens. It says something about our program though when we have expectations and extreme disappointments because of the outcome of certain games.

My question related to this attendance issue/potentially dropping to I-AA is this: if we, as the BG football fans, were to simply purchase all of the tickets for the Miami game, would we be able to use the paid attendance if those tickets are not actually used by people to attend the game? I apologize for not re-reading one of the 57 attendance threads, but I don't feel like I would have any better understanding than I currently have.

The reason I ask is an email that most of us probably received from Greg Christopher with a ticket order form for the Miami game. The letter basically encouraged attendance and encouraged the purchase of tickets for donation to non-profit organizations. I believe there were group rates for groups of 10 and up at a rate of something like $14 or $15 per ticket. If we are allowed to simply purchase tickets that will not be used and count it toward our attendance, I am willing to drop $150 to keep us from going I-AA.

I have thought these things myself. Almost no one agrees with me, but two things are clear to me. The major schools have a long-term objective of getting teams like us out, and I think they will eventually succeed. In the meantime, the current arrangement with BG in the MAC with multiple bowl games suits me just fine, so long as it is financially sustainable.

Easy Bleeding--take a deep breath.

For BG it's I-A all the way IMO. Stepping down to I-AA would be crushing in many, many ways and I won't even think any further about BG and I-AA past this post.

My life will not be impacted too greatly either way. I just like going to football games at the Doyt....

Zom - nothing against dogs at all. I've always been a cat guy, myself. It was just an expression.

O&B - my blood pressure is just fine. I'm not as worked up as I may have sounded, just adamant.

Double D - you make some good points, and I only now recall you making them during the hockey game last night in the chat. But in all honesty, I think we are in a great situation where we are now. We have proven that we can compete at this level on many occasions (I need not list them, and I don't have the time), and we have proven that we are capable and willing to make the financial commitment. What the Citadel is doing is great and I am happy for them. But I see no correlation whatsoever between their situation and ours. I appologize if I seem closed-minded here - I really don't mean to be. I just honestly don't.

D-1A
D-1AA
and so on and so forth.

Then drop the crappy attendance requirement.

Bleeding...You kind of sound like Psycho from Stripes...I know I know...I "just made the list."

I'll point out that for one season in the early 80s, was it 1982 or 83? the ENTIRE M.A.C. competed at the 1AA level. The world didn't stop. The Doyt didn't crumble. Just a couple seasons later we were back to post-season play getting Stolzted at the Cal Bowl.

Again, I liked your civilized response to my initial post BO. I am playing a bit of the devil's advocate in this situation. But like Flipper said I like going to games at the Doyt.

Think for a moment how Falcon Football would really be impacted by dropping to 1AA? It's not like we are getting awesome out of conference games at the Doyt. We could still go play Ohio State or Wisconsin or whomever. Would the quality on the field drop THAT much?

I am also unsure why talking about this or contemplating this makes me the worst Falcon fan since Mrs. Meyer's wife?

I would hate it if we dropped to 1-AA. I'm in the camp that thinks it would be disastrous to the university as a whole.


However, if you're a 1-AA team, Ohio is the best place to be.



This conversation goes way beyond football, which is why it's ridiculous for some (obviously not you DD) to rave about it after 1 football loss. Somebody go tell the women's basketball or volleyball teams they have to drop to 1-AA. Tell Ryne Hamblet he has to drop. Tell our soccer players -- tell Jimmy Spratt.


My opinion is that BG will not drop to 1-AA unless there is a massive NCAA division in the future. It's not like we are just going to float off into oblivion while the rest of D-1A happily wanders on. If there is a serious conversation amongst the big boys to push the little guys out, we might get kicked out in that scenario. However, as long as the MAC is a bonified D-1A conference, one of it's most storied and competitive member institutions is not just going to get swept away.

Ummmmmm 1AA is a football designation only. 1AA is still Division One as far as the NCAA in Indy is concerned. Football is the only sport that is affected if such a move was made. HOckey would still be in the CCHA competing at the Division 1 level as would men's and women's basketball, soccer, baseball and softball. Most Division 1AA football schools are full blown Division 1 in every other sport.
