Leaving Iraq

I know this is not completely football related, but I will post it here anyway. Hopefully, this will be my last post until I reach U.S. soil. We are scheduled to depart Iraq later this week followed by a short lay-over south of here, a week or so in Indiana and then back home hopefully by Veterans Day.

It has been a very long 14 months being away from the family and BG sports, but it has also been a rewarding deployment as well. Our unit was responsible for finding and neutralizing over 350 IED's from Iraqi roads making it safer for Coalition Forces as well as the citizens of Iraq. It has also been a year filled with sadness, as some of our brothers and sisters made the ultimate sacrifice, or were injured trying to make this a safer place.

I know this was a disappointing week for our Falcons and I too have not been happy with our performance and the loss to Temple. One thing I have learned is that football is just a game and that it is important to keep things in perspective.

See everyone soon (maybe the Miami game).

Glad to see you're coming home! Hope you can make it for the Miami game. The Miami whammy will surely be no match for your return.

Again, I don't know you personally, but I am very grateful for everything you've done. Safe travels and hopefully I'll get the chance to meet you and give my thanks in person at one of the upcoming Falcon events.

And, on a related note, I came to much the same conclusion as you did recently. I was disappointed with a number of things, one of which was the state of Falcon football, but then I learned that my friend Evan was soon to return from Iraq as well. He's been serving in Baghdad since last November. No matter how disappointed I was with the events on the athletic playing field, none of it can touch the extreme happiness/relief of this sort of news.

It will be great to meet you in person after seeing the cardboard cutout!

I echo the thanks that the others have given. Tonight is trick or treat and our kids can walk safely in our neighborhoods freely, because of men like you. Thank you seems so inadequate.

Be safe until you return to Falcon soil.

Mitch, can't wait to see you and the family! I hope to see you at the Miami game, but if you can't make it we'll definately have to organize an AZZ.com welcome home party for you sometime soon.

God bless, and be safe!

So wait, they ship you to Iraq for a year-plus, then before you can go home, they make you go to INDIANA!?!?

What a bunch of a-holes! :-D

Be safe, Mitch! And get home soon!

(Oh, and depending on where you're at amongst the Hoosiers, I probably know a place or two to find a nice cold beer or six!)
