"Well, I think they still think we can win....."

Here’s the first question and answer from this week’s quotes:

Q: How is the mood of the team?

GB: "Well, I think they still think we can win, and they are still playing as hard as they can considering what they have been through. We are still going to prepare just like we do every week to try to go and beat Akron."

A statement like that doesn’t exactly bode well for the old confidence level. "Well, I think they still think we can win……….” Sheesh. :smt017

Sounds defeatist, but I doubt he meant it that way. He's got a bad habit of not really coming across the way I think he intends a lot of the time.

The use of the word "they" is a little troubling though. I wonder if a divide is building between the staff and the team.

This is the part I don't like. We've repeatedly heard in postgames that we weren't ready, or we weren't mentally tough enough.

I'd prefer if we found a new way to prepare, because the current way ain't cuttin' it.

Of course, I'm probably just viewing this in the most negative light possible, because it's what I do. Not hearing this whole thing in context, I have a feeling it was a bumbling answer, and like J4H said, didn't come across how the coach intended.

Read them all, and I think this is one of the better pressers he's given.

http://bgsufalcons.cstv.com/sports/m-fo ... 06aaf.html

Even as a fan that is mostly in Brandon's corner (though I can see, understand and in some cases sympathize with the arguments against him), there is always one or two phrases that make me scratch my head and re-read a couple of times. I see none of that here.

And I don't think I'd read anything into the use of the word "they" here, either. "They" ARE the ones that are playing, and that's how he used it.

If he would have made any reference to "we'll try it again next year", I'd have been worried. But aside from talking about guys getting experience this year and over the offseason, he didn't. He seems focused on taking care of business in the next three games.

The players interviewed sound like they're in the right place, too, or at least know how to say the right things.

The two-headed QB idea, however... not sure I'm a fan of that.

That's because it's a stupid idea, and it always has been. You need "the guy" at QB.

As far as focusing on this year, this quote made me think exactly the opposite:

"(Bullock) needs another winter in the weight room and another spring ball, as do 50 of my players. Another winter in the weight room and another spring football (season) and look out."

Again, we're obviously reading too much into what he says, but I continue to be troubled by how he presents himself and the team. Again, too many excuses for my liking.

I liked this answer. Much more than coach-speak and a few sentences to send the SID on his way:

Is Anthony Turner struggling with his confidence?
"Well, I think what you can say about Anthony, and what you can say about our entire team, is that we just have to develop some consistency. He has demonstrated that he can make plays and run the offense. The Buffalo game was an example; he did a nice job there. At FIU, he was moving us before he got hurt. I think since he got hurt he hasn't thrown the ball as effectively as he did going into the season. He seems to be a little rusty. He hasn't been able to practice as much as he wants coming off of that injury and I just think he should have been rounding into midseason form but he was trying to come off an injury. I think he has to make some plays like he did early in the season, and that will help his confidence, but that's easier said than done. And, we have to help him; we have to catch balls. We dropped some balls Saturday that should have been caught. And, things like the fumble on the one-yard line killed us. If we score there, it's a different ball game. So it's not just Anthony Turner, it's the whole team. We need to continue to develop consistency and I think that will create confidence."

Some of us who have been hard on AT can look at his situation from a different perspective because of this quote.

Maybe, but from a philosophical and neurological standpoint Brandon can only think he knows what they are thinking. All appearances in practice may indicate that they are playing with the right attitude, they may even tell him they can go out and win. The fact remains that it is not yet possible for a man to be in another man's brain. Maybe with technological advances in the future brain waves can be synched up and Brandon can actually read the players thoughts, but until that time, that statement is as accurate as he can say it.

I actually had started to write a "disclaimer" for that comment, then decided I didn't know how to write. I wrote it off when he mentioned Bullock since he praised him in other quotes. I can see how the "50 of my players" can be construed that way, but I was able to shrug that one off after the tone of much of the rest of the interview.

Of course, you and hammb would point out the one cloud in the sky if Brandon said it was a beautiful sunny day out, so I wouldn't expect you to see it that way.

As far as the 2 QB, again, I agree with you there. It's great that Sheehan's gonna get some reps in practice as the #1, but if Turner's consistency "issues" are because he's trying to be "too" perfect (which sometimes, I think that's the case) with his throws, how is that going to get better with his back-up warming up on the sidelines waiting? Likewise for Sheehan. "Here's your shot, kid...hey AT! Be ready in case he f*cks it up!"
