And yet, Michigan State could still go to a bowl game.

Not that it affects BG this year, but if you fire your coach mid-season, you shouldn't go bowling. If you lose to a I-AA team (Hello, Indiana!), you shouldn't go bowling. The list goes on and on....

I just read the article in the Blade online. Smith will remain through this season. Thats a bit of an insult. If the team is still in bowl contention, why not show him the door now and hope an interim coach can pull it together? It seems like everyone from the top down at MSU has flushed this season. In 2000 Blackney coached the season out, but he resigned and was not fired. Thats a big difference to me.

Because coaching changes in mid-season will cause you to lose at least 2 seasons in regards to bringing in an interim, finding a "real" coach, installing a new system, and not to mention recruiting.

At least at the end of the season it's not so rough on the players and you can bring in a true change to the program. Mid-season is just asking for trouble.
