"EXTRA POINTS: Brandon turned two plays from Saturday into the league office for review: the punt Temple blocked in the first quarter, and the personal foul penalty earlier in the drive on Temple defender Evan Cooper. Brandon said Cooper made a "cheap shot" on guard John Lanning, causing a concussion, and he should have been ejected. Lanning did not leave the game until after the blocked punt, where the Owls' Junior Galette stepped on Lanning's knee and chest to boost himself to block the punt. "It was an illegal play," Brandon said. "[And] Lanning was out of it." ... Defensive tackle Brad Williams practiced on Sunday."

Hmmm... I didn't see a good enough replay on the block, I just figured he had ridiculous ups and elevated more when the BG defender caught him.

In other news, its good to see Brad W. is back in practice, and I hope Lanning's concussion wasn't too severe or lingering, for his sake.

When that BS went down my dad and I both looked at each other and said "is it legal to jump on your opponent's chest?" If it isn't, it should be. That is a damned good way to get someone seriously hurt, and it should be a personal foul, just as roughing the kicker is. Seriously - if "roughing the center" is an actual penalty, then why isn't this? I wish someone could post a video of this - it was egregious, and I had almost forgotten about it.

Yea, I never saw a replay of it, but I remember it looking as if the guy was standing on Lannings Shoulders......I also saw the cheap shot and it was wayyyyyyyyyy after the whistle.........

And yes....Brad Williams has been back in practice not sure if he will play saturday......Also, Corey has had the flu and missed the last two practice, not sure bout his status.......oh yea and Terrel White is injured as well....not sure exactly what is wrong with him....

I think it was a Michigan game a while back, but I saw a game where one of the defenders on his way to try to block the FG sort of climbed one of the blockers. The coach questioned it and the commentators both said it was legal. I don't know if it really is, but they seemed to think it was.

I have sen penalty flags get tossed for leaping RB's throwing kung fu kicks at defenders....I think you should call leaping at a guys chest with your foot extended a personal foul.

So far as the hit on Lanning...it was waaaaay dirtier than the hit Smith laid on the kid frorm OU.. IIRC, the play was dead and the kid from Temple flew into the pile from the side and hit John well after he had relaxed and was nolonger attempting to make any blocks.

I agree the late hit was very , very dirty. I remember seeing it on the broadcast out of the corner of my eye and knew exactly what happened while the announcers were trying to figure it out. The reason it is such a touchy play is because it is down by the pile and those big guys legs are wrapped up and when you get hi-lowed like that your knee can easily get twisted the wrong way. Considering the weight of lineman that is no small ding injury.

Propelling yourself up an opponent is fair game though. If dude is going up you like a ladder drive forward and send him back. If the play truly was on Lanning who had a mild concussion and "was way out of it" or whatever the quote was I have to question why he was on the field???

Ahh that makes a bit more sense, the chronology was somewhat ambiguous in the initial quote in the paper. . . Thanks for clearing that up, BGFan, and please have a Guinness or 5 for me at Centre Ice this weekend!

That was my reaction as well, DD. Lanning kind of stood there and let the guy climb up him rather push him back as soon as he left his feet. But I guess the whole concusion thing is probably why Lanning didn't execute properly.

And I checked with a buddy that is a high school ref about the legality of using another player for leverage. Here is what he said: "If that would have been a Temple player that he climbed up, it's a penalty. The Temple defensive player leaped onto the BG guard and looked to me that he took another step on top of him before propelling further into the air. I don't think it’s illegal in the NCAA rules, but it probably will be in the future as players could get hurt doing that, and the High school governing bodies wouldn't approve of it as acceptable either"

I saw the replay, and the topic came up during the game as well in the chatroom. As far as I know it is perfectly legal to climb your opponent to block a kick. The blocker should push him back...obviously he was out of it mentally because of the concussion, thus an easy blocked punt.

Like Warthog said, if he had climbed one of his teammates it would've been illegal, but it is most certainly not illegal to climb one of the blockers like that.

Wouldn't surprise me if it became illegal in the future, though...

On the radio program, Brandon explained that the blockers job is not to move forward as it will provide a gap that a defender might exploit so they are supposed to stand as they did. Another reason I hate that formation.
