Centennial Game For BG in 2010?

Post by BGSU33 »

I know it's still six years from now, but BG will be celebrating its 100th birthday in 2010. With that being said, many schools across the land schedule a big-named football game for their centennial or bicentennial year celebration. I think this is something BG should do, and should start looking into now, if it hasn't done so already.

Our 2010 future schedule tentatively only has a game at Ohio State. I think this is a great opportunity to try and lure a Big Ten schools or something to come to BG. The Sebo SAC will be in place, hopefully we'll still be playing as well or better then we have the last couple years, we need to start (if we haven't already) looking to bring in a BCS school for that year.

I don't see the BCS lasting much longer. I think there contract ends in a couple years and that should be it. Every year they try to improve this poll and every year they fail. I'm looking at the latest poll and I still want to know how they improved anything. The fact is that you can still end up with multiple national champions. I can't wait for the year where there are 5-6 one loss teams all deserving a shot in the "national championship" game. Whether a playoff is coming in the next decade is hard to say but the BCS has got to go. It doesn't work. If it worked everyone would agree that LSU were the sole champs last year. They supposively improved things. Seems like me the same thing can happen again and will continue as long as that system exists.

I don't care about the BCS, though I fully expect it to survive.

I just want bowl games, now and forever.

Kdog is right. I think 2006? is the last year for the BcS contract. IT was created to last 8 years, with each of the 4 bowls to get the title game twice. Then they have to decide to continue the BcS, or come up with something new.

I think there is enough protest and valid arguement to dump the system, but there are also enough trev alberts out there to continue it. I hope for the former, and maybe they will create a playoff, but I doubt it. God knows there are more than enough people, including sports analysts that want it to happen, but maybe they wont. Either way, something needs to change.

Obviously no matter what they change in the BCS, there will always be faults. That to me says just toss the whole thing! If they do keep it going or try somehow to "change" it again after the contract is up, they could actually ruin the post season of college football. I don't care how many Trev Alberts' we have in the world that want to keep it going, every team and coach in the country could unite and just say screw it! Everyone knows it's flawed and it gets no where every year!

yes, but a lot of those coaches (currect BcS teams) like it. It lets then skip ahead of the mid majors that they cannot compete with. Can you seriously tell me Kansas, NCst, even Northwestern(granted they put up one helluva fight that we werent expecting) deserved a bolw last year? SUre as hell not over NIU. Those schools know they wint get screwed at the to pof the system as they dont compete for nat'l titles, btu its helping them in reduculous ways. You may have some arguement from USC etc who have been douched by the system, but for the most part I think the currect BcS coaches would want to keep it.

Getting this thread back on topic ...

Let's hope that's just the start of it for 2010. That year should be a non-stop celebration for the BGSU, a chance to really shine in the spotlight. BGSU33 brings up a great point - now is the time to get hopping on this. If we're ever going to do a 2-for-1 or whatever it takes to get a "big-name" school at the Doyt, that's the year. Could we get the Cluckeyes to show up? Dunno. But let's find out!

We are already slated to go TO Cbus that year, but getting another big school to come to us woul be even better. I think the univ. should definatly get cracking on this asap. maybe even toss in the "but its out 100th anniv. dont you want to crush us when it will hurt more *bambi eyes*" so we get the pity vote from them. Whatever it takes, but we should not be playing a 1-AA or even a sub 7-5 type team that year in OOC.

Many schools have done this for either their centennial or bicentennial year. I think it's a great idea and one that we should follow. I think we should go after a Big Ten team for several reasons, being the MAC and Big Ten are basically in the same area, more people in the BG area would probably want to see a Big Ten team come here as opposed to a Big 12 or Big East teams and we'd probably get a good flow of their fans too, which only increases the chance of a sellout. I'd rather fill the opponent section seats than for them to be empty.

Teams I would shoot for that we might have a chance are Purdue, Iowa, Minnesota and Michigan State. MSU hasn't tested MAC waters, but Iowa, Purdue and Minny have. They might come. Depending on how our two-game series with Wisconsin goes in 2005 and 2006, the Badgers might also be an option. As for schools like Ohio State and Michigan, I don't think it will ever happen. As much as I would love to see it, I just can't ever envision the Buckeyes coming to Doyt L. Perry Stadium. Illinois might be an option, but as for teams like Illinois, Indiana and Northwestern, they don't really present the same kind of draw. That could possible change in upcoming years, and I'd take them over a Sun Belt team or something, but I was thinking bigger.

I wouldn't at all be opposed to seeing teams outside of the Big Ten, I just think it wouldd be a good place to star for the reasons above.

I think Minn. would be the prime candidate for these reasons.

-Big 11 school, so the location is good

-they dont suck, and it wont be like an indiana beating or something

-they arent rediculously good, so it wouldnt be a blowout against us

-people will show up to watch us play Minny

-its not really close, like Um or osu, so their wouldnt be an overwhelming opponent fanbase there.

I think we can do better than Minnesota.

You know what would be cool? Bringing in West Virginia. I think we could pull it off, too. They played at Cincinnati a couple years back. Maybe old man Nehlen would grease a few wheels for us.

The best part: Marshall fans wouldn't be able to see straight for the next ten years.

Unless some scheduling philosphies change around the country, I think the best we could do would be either Virginia Tech or Kansas State. Both have played at MAC schools in the past. In fact, I believe Virginia Tech was Western Michigan's anniversary opponent.

(The Broncos got hammered, too).

Find a "big" program that wants to recruit more in Ohio. I believe that's one of the reasons for the Badgers agreeing to play us in Cleveland.

Shoot, to hear the folks in Huntington tell it, by 2010 Marshall wil have won at least one National Title. Maybe we can get them...
