Hey BG, it’s called Fieldturf, buy some!!!
I was even pulling for you guys tonight, but man, they should force BG to replace that cow pasture you call a field. It was like watching a Pop Warner game out there, with all the guys slipping and sliding in the mud. What a joke. And then maybe one day you can find a real team to play on it. Every year that field is shot this time of the year. I wish you had another game at home so they could turn it into a sandbox like they had to a few years ago. Take a look around the MAC. It’s a northern conference, and everyone has switched over but you and Ball State – and Ball State is about to. I’ll save you trouble of searching for the link: http://www.fieldturf.com/

I agree with you on this one. It rained, but not enough for the field to be THAT muddy. It dosen't drain and it looks like the grass is really, really thin.
Funny thing was the guy at halftime slept and fell and drilled his field goal, in tennis shoes.

What I don't understand is why the field was uncovered ALL day.

It didn't start raining until after 2:00. I'm sure that for the time it would have taken to cover, and then uncover the field, it would have probably been fully covered for all of about 10 minutes.BGDrew wrote:What I don't understand is why the field was uncovered ALL day.
And OBC, this is football, pansie. This is the way football always has been played and was always intended to be played. If you don't like it, don't watch. I don't care if everyone in the world goes to field turf - if we like natural grass (and we have won some HUGE awards for the quality of our field - look it up), then screw everyone else in the rest of the world.

Well there was no reason for the field to be uncovered. Did they expect it to get sun today?

Listen, all I'm saying is that I understand we play on a grass field and I love that. However, the field should have been covered until 5PM. After that you just take what mother nature gives you.
With that, I'm taking a break from here because I can already tell things are going to get ugly.

Oh, no. Things aren't going to get ugly as far as I am concerned, and I really don't see the need for things to get ugly in general. We lost a close game, thats all. I honestly just didn't understand what you were getting at, but I can see your point now and I appologize for being such a snippy douchebag. My only excuse is - I'm tired. Time to hit the hay...BGDrew wrote:

I too think we need to seriously consider installing field turf at the Doyt. The comments you make OB are just stupid. Any and all D1 teams will have problems playing in conditions like that. Conditions that are out of our control.....OhioBobcat wrote:I was even pulling for you guys tonight, but man, they should force BG to replace that cow pasture you call a field. I don't think its an embarassing. This is what football looks like on rainy nights with a natural grass surface.ZuluWarrior wrote:The field was an absolute embarrassement to our school. My wife walked into the family room and actually asked me, in all sincerity, why I was watching high school football.
Sure, Turffield or any of the other new artifical turfs would have eliminated the mud. And a lot of other schools and pros are going to it....... not that I agree or disagree...... but for the purist out there, natural grass is the only surface to play on.
The real question might be..... Will FieldTurf (or whatever brand we chose) help recruiting. And who can pony-up the nearly $1 Million to install it. Cause it will only occur through donations.

FieldTurf right now is the best, imho...Tech83 wrote:I don't think its an embarassing. Is it worse to see a mud-filled field, or is it worse to see someone get tackled and then pull a slip-n-slide 40 yards hydroplaning across the plastic carpet? The weather made it bad no matter what surface we would have played on.
Would we have won this game if we had artificial turf?

This reminds me of a recurring sketch form the early days of Saturday Night Live. Jane Curtin used to host a segment called "What if".
They tackled questions like "What if Superman had landed in Germany as a child" (he became a Nazi) or "What if Spartacus had a Cessna" (he bombed the Roman Centurions with clay pots and his sandals).
I always did like that sketch...
"What if Doyt Perry Stadium had field turf?" Big Bird might still have slipped, but at least his ass wouldn't have gotten all muddy.

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
I would like to see Fieldturf put down at the Doyt too. All the talk about how it’s for pansies and whatnot, save it. There’s a reason why so many schools are using it. Obviously, the main obstacle is cost because I believe it costs about a million to put in. But once installed, there’s no more moving, fertilizing, painting, etc. There’s minimal maintenance once installed, but you can practice inside the stadium when wantd, you can have a field that would hold up in many conditions, the band could practice on it, you could even use the stadium for other events such as high school games like other MAC schools do. I think it would be a benefit for BG to use it. In a perfect world, yeah, I like grass. But Ohio is far from good enough weather this time of year and we can’t afford to just put down three new field surfaces like Ohio State – which is also considering using it. Fieldturf is the next best things and in times like last night, is much better than grass. Neither team can really “play” in conditions like last night. The weather in the Midwest is a big reason why so many schools have made the switch and why many more are still lined up to do it.
If I were a representative from Fieldturf and saw last night’s game on TV, I’d be on the first flight out this morning to talk to BG’s administration. But this isn’t just based on last night’s game either. Our field has been shredded many times before and one of these times we’re going to see this happen near midseason and we’ll really have a problem on our hands. And if we do ever replace our grass, I sure as hell hope we do the right thing and use FieldTurf or a similar type of surface and brand and not the type of Nexturf junk that Toledo used. Fieldturf, Astroplay, Sport turf, etc. are similar types with blades of grass for footing, rubber pellets for traction and cushioning, and a sand and rock base for drainage where as the Nexturf kind UT uses is like old Astroturf but basically just with longer blades. It’s junk which is why so many schools didn’t go with it in the first place and why most schools that did use it switched to Fieldturf a year after it was put in.
