Freddie Barnes

Am I crazy or does anyone else think that Barnes would be a great QB in our system (as shown in the Wisconsin game) with a full off season to progress with his passing abilities. How much worse could he be than the inconsistent Turner which we had this year? I think with Freddie's running ability and the potential to be able to make the throws we need to move down the field it would be an excellent alternative for next year. Shoot, he had 158 yards against Wisconsin. 100 yards against Buffalo, and 70 yards against Florida International. The Kent game was a dud for him and the others but if he can get the throwing down the sky's the limit.

I think you're nuts.
I've watched Freddie in all the preseason stuff and then again when he got in to play this year. He does not have the PHYSICAL ability to throw the ball at a D1A level. Best case scenario for him would be to become Josh Cribbs, but I'm not sure if his arm is even as good as Cribbs' was.
If they're going to change the scheme to a pure option offense and work it well, then I think Barnes could be the QB, but not in the spread offense. He just cannot throw the ball well enough to keep the defense honest. Once they start crowding the line of scrimmage his running ability would be negated.
Personally, I think the best place for Barnes is as a RB/WR combo role. Get him the ball and let him make plays. The occasional pass back would be acceptable, but I don't think making him the starting QB would be a real mistake.

I'm going to disagree with your concept and I have said all along that Turner is the better pure passer and QB (not like thats saying much). However, I will agree that Freddie needs to touch the frickin ball a lot more! His 1st ever game and he sets a school record, he scores almost all of our TD's, and shows the leadership and sportsmanship of a champion but he never gets the ball anymore! I know his ankle might have had a lot to do with that, but I still would have liked for Brandon to just come out and say that!
I think Turner has the potential to be a great duel threat QB if we stop calling all the damn designed runs! The toughest play in football to stop is the QB who drops back to throw, goes thru all of his reads and then on OCCASION tucks it in and runs with it!

There will be BGSU fans that say "Man, they should have given Barnes a chance at QB" for decades to come. Radioactive waste dissapates more quickly than this topic.
If I could fashion these words into a wooden stake, I would do so and drive it through the vampire heart that is the "Barnes should QB" topic.
BARNES IS NOT A GOOD ENOUGH PASSER TO QB HERE.
But, I can''t...so I merely vent my spleenn with the usual psychotic rants. Don Quixiote had his windmills, I have Freddie Barnes the QB...

I bet Wisconsin doesn't think I'm nuts. He wasn't ready to throw at this level and still completed enough passes to probably win the game if it weren't for a couple of dropped passes and 2 special team breakdowns. If he doesn't have the arm strength to throw the routes that are in our offense than fine but as far as accuracy goes and the threat of running I think he's our best option unless Turner shows up next year and performs like he did in our spring game prior to Omar's last year. All I see is overthrow after overthrow and then running like he's running on glass.

Turner bad does not equal Barnes good. It's entirely possible neither are the answer at QB. I'm 100% sure Barnes isn't. Who knows about Turner.

Wisconsin played a pretty vanilla defense...by the time the Kent game rolled around, people were onto Freddie's strengths (running) and weaknesses (throwing anything farther than 5 yards) and they adjusted the defense to handle him. Since he can''t throw acccurately more than 5 yards, it wasn't hard to do.
If we were the 1973 OSU Buckeyes, I would say Freddie is the perfect QB. Since we throw more than 12 times a season, we need a QB with more passing ability.
I think Freddie is going to be a great WR for us...

Keep FB as a WR/RB threat. He is great with the ball in the open field. I'm not sold on him passing the ball.
Let's remember he suffered that high ankle sprain the left him hobbling for half the season. With a healthy FB, we have an excellent weapon.

It's 100% time to go with a new QB. We need to scrap Turner, Barnes and the other kid who got some time at the end. Time to start fresh...sometimes people just aren't fit for a particular program. And their lack of talent can't be blamed on Mick...just look at what he did with Omar!!

Yeah I couldn't agree more. I always got so frustrated when there was an open left side but we all knew he wouldnt throw for it!
