Don't look now, but it could be Akron!

You know, with all the MACC talk we've had around here, we've left out one team that is still in the thick of the MAC race - Akron!

The Zips are 4-1 and have both Marshall and Miami left at home along with a road game at Ohio. If BG beats Marshall and Akron wins those three games, the Zips would go to the MACC!

Can you imagine......

I would love that.

Akron winning would actually hurt our chances of winning the West -- our crossover opponents' records would get worse if they beat Marshall and OU. I'll root for them to beat Miami (thus lowering UT's opponent's records) and lose to Marshall and OU. I can't believe they're 4-1....another example of how bad some of these teams really are.

Good call on Akron, but I agree that the sun will soon set on their season. If I were a betting man - and I'm not - I'd lay money on Akron losing three of their last four.
While I was working on my column about the bowl picture -
http://www.ay-ziggy-zoomba.com/articles/1987alum - I figured Akron beating Ball State, but losing to Miami, Marshall and Ohio. I think the Ohio game is winnable, but the Zips have been poor on the road. [BTW, if Akron beats Ball State AND Ohio, they will actually be bowl eligible. Go figure.]
To wit ... they got thumped by a Penn State team that can't hit its behind with both hands; they got walloped by a very good Virginia team; they beat a below average Kent team by less than a TD; they got handled by Northern; they squeaked past UCF by less than a TD.
They're riding a three game winning streak, but I'd bet Marshall is going to lay the wood on them. The Blundering Turd has been in the title hunt before and the coaches know what buttons to push.
Bottom line - the Zips have something to build on for next year.

And since the Akron/Marshall game and Akron/Miami game don't conflict with BG games, I'm gonna make the 10 min trip over to the Rubber Bowl for those games.

But they won't have a Heisman candidate at QB next year.
