suckeyes: the new era of selling out

Post by BGSUfanatUT »

ohio state sold the rights to the osu-Michigan game. This is pretty damn low if you ask me.

Lets call the BG/ut game the owens corning battle of I-75 Mcdonalds footaball classic brought to you by JEEP.

All McDonald's would have to do is offer one year of free Big Mac's for Tommy and they would have a deal.

A couple things I've learned about this (while still being sick). Its actually a joint venture by both schools, and apparently SBC already sponsors the OU-Texas game.

And after thinking about it a bit, and while it would never happen, I wouldn't mind a bit if someone sponsored the BG-UT game like that, giving each school $500,000+ over two years to bastardize a football game. To get at least the same payout to play a game our conference has us play anyway as we get to go on the road OOC, I'd take it and be happy.

I think "the Battle of I-75" is pretty lame as a nickname for our series.

What about "Black Swamp Brawl."

I dunno.

I'm disgusted by this, of course. However, BG@UT, you have given me a wonderful idea, brother.

Why don't we take this as an example. Instead of selling out the game, let's make it a fund raiser or a drive of some sort between the schools.

I'VE GOT IT!!!!!!!!

Let's make this the American Red Cross Battle for Blood! Not only would we have a competition between the schools as to who can raise the most donations, but a pint of blood will give you a free ticket to the game or like activity. There is a TON of possibilities with this.

We would combine the schools to assist the area red cross with much needed blood donations. We would effectively bitch SLAP the bigger schools selling out, AND we would have a really cool (and approprate) name for the game between BG and Toiletto.

Opinions?

RUIT: OSU and Michigan do something like that the week before their game. I don't know what the "prize" is, obviously no free tickets to the game, though I guess the warm fuzzies of helping someone that needs blood is "prize" enough for some. But its a decent idea.

RUIT: There is already something like this in place, although it happens a few weeks before the game. Each of the schools have a blood drive for a week and then the winner gets a trophy at the BG/UT game. BG has won the blood drive battle the past 2 years. I know this is geared towards the students, but I imagine other people can donate their blood towards this (I may be wrong but I don't think I am)

Of course, if your post had a tinge of sarcasm in it, I apologize for this post. I am the worst reader of sarcasm on the Internet! :)

I'd take $500,000 for throwing the SBC name in front of a BG game. Anyone would be insane not to!! It defintely is a joint venture though between Michigan and the suckeyes. The schools names will be reversed from the SBC Michigan-Ohio State Classic to the SBC Ohio State-Michigan Classic next year. I wouldn't be suprised if this deal goes on for longer even after the 2 years.

Im not saying im opposed to this idea completely, and I realize both schools are involved, but please. That was named the biggest rivalry in sports PERIOD by ESPN. it jsut seems to taint the tradition to me. especially since those big school dont need tha tmoney. Its a little different if they offered it to us and toledo. It looks like they will be showing that game regularly now every year. And talent has as little to do with the winner as osu/mich game. the difference is our school could use the money a LOT more. If they offered, Id say take it, but osu/um better have gotten a crap ton of money, b/c if they didnt get in excess of 1M each or more, then it jsut wasnt worth it to taint the game like that.

Well, sh!t. I was actually pretty excited about my small spark of creativity.

I shan't do that again. Back to being mundane and boring.

How about:

Kinda of long, but it flows.

Its more like the "battle of home field advantage: where the road team never wins"

although after this year, that will no longer be true.

We already have "sponsors" for the football season. Not exactly sure what that means, but Meijer, Pepsi, etc surely pay something for that. And Marathon stepped in at the last minute last year and sponsored the MAC Championship game. I think it would be great if a regional-type corporation wanted to step in and be a "sponsor" of Falcon football. Like Bowling Green Falcon football presented by "Insert business name here".

FWIW, I never the liked the name "Battle of I-75" either. For crying out loud, that road runs from Michigan to Florida. This "battle" could be anywhere! On Madden 2004, you play the game for the "Peace Pipe" trophy. So why isn't it called the "Peace Pipe Trophy Game"?

It has always been known as either "The Battle of I-75" or "The Battle of Northwest Ohio"

The Peace Pipe is the award that is taken home by the winning team. A tradition that originated in the 50s or 60s in BG-TU basketball, then was revived in the 70s or early 80s in football.

We also play Kent for the Anniversary Award since Kent is our '10 sister school.
