D-Coordinator Lovett has left the Falcons for UNC. 5 and counting.

That one hurts, with the way the D had been coming around, but for some reason, I never really thought that Lovett "fit" here.

But could we please stop counting coaches leaving like they were players quitting or transferring? These guys are professionals, and professionals switch jobs. And as has been stated repeatedly around here (to deaf ears in many cases), most of the coaching departures have been guys with a chance to make a fairly significant step up, and the positions have been filled upon their departure.

Lovett leaves for the that great football juggernaught that is North Carolina football? What is GB doing to our football program that our new DC leaves for a also ran football program?

I agree about the coaches - they all have the opportunity better themselves and their family and should take it. Every position that the last 5 have left for is a great move financially and professionally for them. I am happy we had the chance to have had them add BGSU to their resume. Just stinks to lose some good guys all at once.

But, when things are going well where you are, it takes a lot to get you to move. The last few years we had very few coaches move on. This year we have five. This tells me that these guys were out there looking for other work this year as opposed to other years. Why do people who are gainfully employed look for another job? Because they are unhappy where they are is one big reason.

Good luck to coach Lovett. I really thought he had the defense playing hard and making progress.

Amen, brother. Every opening results in the football office being flooded with calls and applications. These are not lateral moves, and other coaches recognize that.

Question still to be answered: why is this dramatically being revealed like it's the end of civilization right smack dab in the middle of National Signing Day?

I do agree with that angle to it (the "looking for work" part), but in the end, it's still a pay raise, or a job with more responsibility. And, for our part, there's a huge difference between a post that wonders if there's something going on, and the falconboy posts above (which I could have probably posted verbatim before he had a chance to).

Maybe something's up in the locker room, maybe it's just a coincidence that this many guys landed new jobs in this offseason. That we've had no trouble filling the spots quickly (and in some cases internally) makes me wish those leaving well and see what some fresh blood can bring to the table to turn this ship around in the fall!

Isn't Butch Davis the new head coach at UNC?? Think of him what you want for his stint with the Browns, but the guy put together a pretty solid record at the U. I think he'll turn UNC into a solid program in the ACC.

Come on, it doesn't take a lot to leave BG to work for Butch Davis in a BCS conference. Especially when you've coached there before....no matter how well things are going.

Lovett didn't fit in here @ AZZ.com, but I'm not sure he wasn't doing a good job with what he had.

Interesting point. Given the downright hideous play-calling and special teams play and execution last year, who's to say that new blood and a fresh approach isn't exactly what program needs right now?

Why must there be reasons outside of the man leaving himself. Good situations can always be made better. Look at his resume, he has been at 3 schools in the last 8 years, 3 at Auburn, 3 at Clemson and 2 here. Lets not forget that he will also be coaching for Butch Davis. UNC is a step up, and really back to where he was. Some of you need to get a grip.

Guess I'm in line for that Defensive Coordinator job as I am his stated successor.

Tommy Thigpen - 2001-2002 @ BGSU - is also on staff for Butch Davis BTW.

I'm not trying to be a Oliver Stone conspiracy theorists or anything. Just that it takes some intent on the employees part to want to move. Maybe all five of these were just situations where a 'headhunter' called them up and asked if they were interested. Maybe they were out 'carpetbombing' their resumes to every school that had an opening. I don't know.

But it seems if a slew of coaches leave after a few succesful seasons, then scenario one makes more sense. When a team has seen their record decline for four straight seasons, scenario two fits better.
