Urban revived a long stalled program and took it to a new and higher level than it had operated at. He established new traditions, and brought new energy into the program that had not existed-if ever-in recent memory. His departure, specifically that he said he wouldn't leave, then a matter of days later, taking another job, left some with a bitter taste in their mouths.
However, BGSU is clearly none-the-worse for the loss. Plus, with Urban lighting up a new Christmas in the WAC, BGSU is being saved from a bombardment of hype surrounding his status. If he had staid, we would now be subjected to the kind of destabilizing speculation that often stunts a program in the wake of a coaches departure. In its place, we have a stable and improving program, a solid coach, and a staff that will remain in place for the long-term.
Having a hot coaching prospect is a double edged sword. In losing him when we did, we kept a top flight coach in Greg Brandon, and we also kept more of the coaching staff, than would have remained behind, were Urban to leave BGSU for a Florida.
In the meantime, we get to enjoy talking about the next great coach on the national stage, having known him before he was famous.
Urban leaving when he did, was a good thing.
Urban leaving when he did, was a good thing.
