New football verbal

WR/DB Antraz Burton from Flint, MI has committed to the Falcons. He's 5'-10, 180 lbs and runs a 4.6 forty. (I wouldn't read much into the 40 time. We don't know what conditions he ran it in, what surface he ran it on and how it was timed, hand or electronically). Rivals doesn't have astar rating on him, but it seems he did well as a DB at a summer camp in Iowa City.

What!

Anyone who only runs a 4.6 40 has no buisness playing DB or WR. Thats just too slow, so unless this guy showed a much faster time somewhere , I woulnd't give this guy a second look , especially at only 5'10.

Flint Journal says he runs a 4.5 forty.

At this combine, he turned in a 4.68:

Top notch reporting at that Flint Journal! Hopefully one day Amstutz will WISH he got a verbal from this kid, but until then... tough cookies, Tommy! (Mmmm...cookies...)

AND, as was mentioned in the first post, who knows what the timing system or conditions were for the 4.6 time? And just because someone's a DB/WR in high school doesn't mean squat when they hit college. First off, its not THAT under-sized, and by the time they throw 15-20 pounds of beef on him his freshman year, its a different story. Not saying we have "ideally" sized DB's, but he's actually right about on par with the rest of our DBs.

I guess that 4.6 forty means that Jerry Rice should've never played receiver either . . .

There's practice/combine fast and there's game fast . . . Hopefully he's the latter.

C'mon factman, you mean all those 4.4's and 4.5's touted by the HS kids and their coach's aren't legit? The Easter Bunny told me they were all electronically timed...

Thanks for the info, Flip. How can any of our fans on the board question who we offer in football? Take a look at the last four classes (the last three in particular) and I do not have a lot of worries on talent evaluation. We'll miss on a guy from time to time- like everyone from Ohio U. to Ohio State does.

Recruit 'em, sign 'em, educate 'em, coach 'em and WIN. That's what coaches do. Good coaches.

If 40 times were the key to recruiting football players at BG, we would not have signed several of our current key DB's and WR's.

Go Falcons!

40 times are overrated. I know nothing of this kid, having never seen him play, but if the coaches feel he can play then he's going to be a Falcon. When it comes to talent, especially on offense, they know what they're doing. We are, IMO, the most talented team in the MAC.

I've seen a lot of guys run fast 40s that cannot play football. And like Option mentioned, Jerry Rice was slow as Molasses, and Cris Carter wasn't exactly tearing up the stopwatch either. Look through the annals of football, both college & pro, they're filled with guys who are supposedly "not fast enough" according to the stop watch. I'll take guys that can play football any day.

I'm partial to "Hombre Secreto" myself, but that soundtrack is stacked!
"Repo Man" is just about my favorite 80's film. I have it on VHS, I wonder if they ever released it on DVD...

Forty times be damned! I think stuff like that is crap. You can either play the game or you can't. You see that on the field. The same type thing happens during NFL scouting combines. They do all this measuring, grading, timing to try to see who is the best player. For my money, go watch some frickin' game film to see who the best player is. You don't win championships just because you have the strongest, fastest, etc. (although that stuff helps!), you win because the players can play the game.

Another fine tune on the S track. Also, "Coup d'etat"...man, I gotta get that on CD. Then I can send the tape back to my friend.
And I absolutely love the instrumental at the end....can't remember the name of the tune but there is no better song to listen driving down the road on a hot summer night with the windows down... :supz:
