Our defense looked improved but...

...I think their tackling still needs work. It seemed a lot of times our first guy going for a tackle would just bounce off of any EMU player. I would hate to see their total for yards after contact. At least the first miss-tackles slow the opposition down and allow 6 more BG players to be there to take 'em down! I don't really want to be nit picking on the subject about bad tackling since it's brought up almost everyday, but until the ball carriers are stopped by our defense on first contact (stiff armed or not), I am going to complain about it.

I think our guys are sometimes too focused on making the big hit and not making the good, sound tackle. Burkes was really flying to the ball tonight. He looked like he was shot out of the cannon. How many times did he fly right by the QB or the ball carrier?

I will agree there. Parks was coming off the end and going right past the QB because he was going so fast. I saw atleast 5 or 6 times that Burkes missed on the blitz too!

This is not all a bad thing. Yes, alot of times you would see someone get in there and miss, but they were being aggressive and disruptive. Much of the time there was a second or third guy right behind them to clean up after the first guy flushed the QB or changed the RB's direction. Parks kept chasing their guys right to Crossley. I thought the dline played great last night. Crossley was awesome. He was all over the place. There's always room to improve, but I thought they played well.

I think this was our D-line's best game...if we are this dominant against NIU, things are different.

That Bowling Green's defensive line played well is correct. As far as the overall defensive performance --- well, that's questionable. E. Michigan, a bottom feeder, shredded BG's secondary with 388 yards, and Deslauriers (WR) ran/caught almost at well through most of the second half.

I can see using one defender to flush the quarterback to another defender to make the play, but how many times did we see the QB simply turn 90 degrees and aviod going down. I al also not a big fan of "bend but don't break" defence. We let them get a lot of yards on us. Yard that set up field goals. We beat them, but not as cleanly as I would have liked. I say we start playing "break their necks" defence.

EMU a bottomfeeder? Don't forget, until yesterday, they were tied with BG for third. That game was a should win for us, but EMU is heading in the right direction and has some fine individual players that can make things happen for them. I agree that there are plenty of things we can still improve on, but give some credit to EMU.

Much of their passing yardage came on a few plays where a certain corner of ours got burned once again. Also, one that went for 40-45 or so was when we were in a zone and brought Burkes on a rush, leaving the middle wide open. That was a tactical mistake on our part. I was frustrated with those plays and with some of the missed tackles mentioned before. If you fix the mistakes made on about three big plays that we gave up, they end up with more like 250 yards passing. There is still plenty of work to be done before we play Marshall and UT, but I think the defense played better than the numbers show. The mistakes that were made were obvious, so I'm sure they will get plenty of attention this week.
Come on guys, the glass is half full (at least!!) :D

Man, we'd better get this pass defense in order for Western and Marshall coming up here , or we're gonna be a world of hurt! :ugh: EMU's Bohnet passes for 365 yards on us, yikes!! ::puke:: Can we ever defend the deep ball? Our secondary seems to play at times like they've got ankle weights on or something.

I couldn't agree with you more. That certain corner got smoked several times and also dropped a sure int. ball. We just got caught that one time with Burkes blitzing. The run defense looks a lot better, but now we have a little work to do with the pass defense. I hope we can get things straightened out by the time Marshall gets in here.

Marshall is dead last in the MAC in total offense.

And we held EMU to 45 rushing yards on 27 carries. BG is up by 3 scores most of the night and everyone knew EMU was gonna throw. I am not saying the secondary played well...they didn't.

Anyone know why Tim Arnold is a non factor at this point?

GADS! You mean there are OTHERS who're seeing what I've been saying about a "certain corner" being burned...plays too soft on underneath routes, gets burned deep when trying to "jam" at LOS... I don't place the blame on ONE player...CB's are gonna get beat no matter how good they are...but 5-6 times a game is NOT getting the job done. Don't we have anyone who can play the position better than this?

After the game was over for the most part, my buddy and I started watching a "certain corner" on EVERY defensive snap. Wow. All I can say is...WOW.

Absolutely looks LOST in pass coverage. Doesn't do real well in run support either.

Maybe it was just an unblievably horrid game for him, but I've noticed him being burnt on more than one occasion over the past 2 years. Let's hope they start giving him some coaching, because right now he does not look like a good solution at CB.

Whats up with Virgil Robinson?

This guy was one of our most highly recruited players. Supposedly an OSU recruit any other year. Why is he not in the 2 deep? This guy has speed , around 4.3 supposedly. Whats the deal?
