Attendance Problems

As we all know, we are having problems getting people in the stands. Well as most people have said on here, these games anymore aren't even fun to go to. 41-20, 51-13, 49-10. I truly love BG, and I'm planning on attending school there next year to, but come on these games are getting out of hand. Last night I had a chance to go, even though I had to work till 5 and a hour and 20 min drive to get there, but I knew going into this game that is was going to be ugly, and I didn't go. So I stayed at home and watched the Michigan Michigan St. game, even though I don't care for either of them, that game is what college football is all about. Coming down to the wire, where every play mattered and you couldn't have a screw up or else. When i go to the BG games all you do is watch BG go nuts on the opposing teams defense. They are better off staying off the field and not wasting there energy because theres no sense in doing it. I think until we offer a more attractive opponnet [persay Marshall] our stands are going to be bare. Deep down inside I love the MAC, the history behind it and everything, but the truth is, it's going no where. I think BG UT MU NIU need to get out and go some where. I know the Big East doesn't seem right, but if we were to join them, every other year we would have teams at the Doyt such as West Vir. Pitt, Syracuse, just to name a few. Not only would they be better competition, but they also have the NAME to back it up. The games wouldn't be blowouts, they would be compettitive. Thats what we need! It's great to play the good MAC teams, because they create competition, but the bottom feeders are absolutely HORRIBLE! Until they pick up there end of the deal, our attendance is going to struggle.

Wow, that's the first time I've ever heard anyone complain about the way BG has been and hopefully will continue to win football games. One, of course, can't always expect a blow-out, but where possible/probable, I hope it continues. It exhilarates me! And as far the competition goes, well let's see, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Purdue, Missouri, Kansas, Michigan , Northwestern, etc. Now if you'd like a steady diet of this kind of competition you're not going to find it in the MAC. If that displeases you, find another University to attend.

Since I would say the conference shuffling is settled for at least a couple more years, we have to take what's given to us. Under your scenario, that leaves two options:
1) Enjoy a great college gameday experience for a great price with a top 25 caliber team on the field, lighting up the scoreboard 40 or 50 points at a time.
2) Hoping we win all our games, but in the fourth quarter or overtime, so that not only do the bowl reps, national media, and whoever else kick us for "being in the MAC", they kick us for not being able to put teams like Buffalo and EMU away.
I know which option I'd take.

I see what you are sayin TG, we are in a lose lose situation. I just want the best for our program. I'll never complain we're winning games, but some times I just wish we were doing it against better competition.

I don't care how much BG wins by! The more points we score the better IMO! I love Falcon football and I have yet to see a game that isn't fun. I don't think the games are really getting out of hand but it seems other teams in the MAC aren't keeping up with BG, UT, NIU, etc. when recruiting. The teams we call bottom feeders are rather inconsistent from season to season lately. It'd be cool to have more competition at games but I will never find a game not fun...I mean come on, it's BG FOOTBALL!!!!!

I agree whole-heartedly and made the same point on the other attendance thread this morning. I love to see BG win, but my god are these games boring. For the most part, they're over by halftime, and they just are not entertaining. Sure I like to see some younger kids and speculate what they'll become, but its not compelling football.
Worst of all is the fact that that if we do actually play a close game against this competition it would actually be even worse, as most of them don't deserve to be on the same field as BG. When they actually do compete with us, its usually because we're playing down to their level. The top of the MAC is so far beyond the bottom of the MAC its unbelievable. The result is that most of our home games are going to be sure blowouts, and are definitely NOT entertaining football.
I'm sorry, but I've found myself wishing the clock to tick faster at every single BG home game this season. WMU should be more of the same, but hopefully the Marshall game can at least provide some entertaining football. FWIW I wouldn't mind if we blew out Marshall either; I have no problem watching us blow out a quality opponent. It's going out there when we're 20+ point favorites, and we end the game by the start of the 2nd quarter that's just so boring. There's no fun in destroying a team that you should destroy, IMO.

Yep, it's like playing as the 49'ers on the old school Tecmo Bowl on Nintendo. The lack of competition eventually kills interest.
Speaking of video games, I'm finally going to upgrade over my original Playstation. Should I go with tthe Playstation 2 or the Xbox?

WTF? Did someone just complain about the way BG is winning games??
I've heard it all now.
Lemme take ya back about, oh, 6 years ago when the BG football team lacked many things....offense, heart, desire, coaching...ect. BG was winning 2, 3 or 4 games a year. I, for one, NEVER wanna go back to that.
I don't care who we're playing....we rack up huge offensive numbers and people still bitch? Our D has been playing solid ball and people still bitch?
You wanna stay home and watch Michigan-Michigan State? Fine. Do it. But don't come here complaining. The Big East? With SorryCuse, Rutgers and Temple???

Pitt? Hell they needed OT to beat FURMAN...and almost lost at home to Ohio U. I'd put BG, NIU, Miami and UT up against the Big Least's best anyday. WVU and UCONN are decent.
One ironic thing is Boise State kicks the living crap outta teams but their fans seem to love it. Same for me with BG.

While the players deserve fans there and screaming and supporting them until the final gun, leaving early doesn't necessarily address the attendance issue as a whole. Once your ticket is ripped, you're there. They don't count heads at the end of the game and send that number in to the NCAA offices. Not attending a game at all because you know it will be a blowout, or you don't feel like watching EMU/BallsTate/CMU/etc. is the issue. If the blowouts bother ya, come out for the first half, enjoy the high flying offense we have going on, then enjoy the town and/or the tailgate atmosphere. Being a weekend worker and now out of stater KILLS me this time of year!

Maybe everyone needs to drink more so the game seems to go faster or something! The games aren't boring at all to me and I don't even get to participate in halftime like the rest of the people who are dressed like me. It's Falcon football, enjoy it while it's good! To see less than 11,000 in the stands yesterday and now to hear part of the 11K saying games are boring, it's starting to become clear why no one comes to games. How are we supposed to create interest in the games if the die-hard fans are saying the games are boring? That's horse crap!

I remember those years not so long ago.. We were all hoping the clock would move faster so we could go home without the other guys scoring more. I don't want to go back to that. I think BG football is a great entertainment bargain. You get to see a great football team and a great band at halftime, even if they don't roll around on the ground. With tailgating, you can make a day of it.
A move to another conference would create all kinds of problems with the travel budget. For the time being we have to live with the competition the way it is and hope it improves.

I
Love
Blowouts
Games that go down to the wire are terrific when I don't care about the two teams. But when one of my teams is playing, I'll take a blowout every single time.
So, of course, I'm hoping the Western Michigan game is over before halftime.

And I was already to reimburse everone for their ticket. I said I would reimburse people if they kept their ticket stub and if we drew 25,000. Heck we could not even draw 1/2 of that. That is pathetic. The city made a big deal not to have Halloween Trick or Treat on Saturday because of the BG game. We should had trick or treat on Friday night and gave each kid a ticket to the game. We need to find a way to get people into the stands!!!! No excuses!!!!!
Conference USA anyone?

I know I will get flamed for this, but oh well. A lot of people are saying that the attendance problem is related to the quality of opponent. (I disagree, but that is not my point here.) So if that is the case, how about discussing a move to Conf USA again? I know most people think that Conf USA is crap, but c'mon. Be honest, the MAC sucks this year and has more potential to suck in the future. Yes the MAC can produce a few good teams each year, but we also produce four or five or six of the worst Div I-A teams as well.
The top Conf USA and top MAC teams are very similar and would be very competive against each other. But Conf USA has more depth. The MAC is a cliff after BG, UT, NIU, and Miami. It is a long way down to BSU, WMU, CMU, Buffalo, Kent, etc. And I don't see those teams being competitive for a long, long time.
Face it, if you think the attendance issue is opponent related, the Conf USA could provide much better opponents then the MAC does. And I am sure the Conf USA teams would bring more fans to the games as well. I don't care if the team is coming from Texas, Alabama, Florida or where ever. I guarantee they would bring more fans than someone like Eastern Michigan. They are less than an hour from BG and they had more cheerleaders on the field than fans in the stands.
