Just curious if anyone went to the Falcon Bash golf outing and reception today?

Yup, and it was an absolutely fantastic event. Major kudos to all that were involved in planning it! I'm exhausted, so I'll let others elaborate on the day's happenings.

For sure. My golf game sucked out loud, as you were so loathe to point out at any given opportunity. Still, the event planners had nothing do with how horribly I was swinging the sticks. The AD did an absolutely phenomenal job.

How did the outing go and what did Urban have to say? Any word on how much was raised?

"I played golf, I'm not good at golf, I never got good at it. I never got a hole in one, but I did hit a guy in one. And that's way more satisfying. You're supposed to yell "fore." But I was too busy mumbling, "there ain't no way that's gonna hit him."

I just wish it wasn't so expensive to play in the outing. I would have liked to take part. I'd love to hear how much it pulled in though (and hope the money will truly be split evenly).

Great event. Urban had good comments and talked about all the good friends he still has at BG. Talked about how he didn't want to coach here as not a good situation to walk into a 2-9 team. However, everyone advised him to take it (Holtz, etc.) as to if it were a good situation, they wouldn't want him. He also talked about feeling like a gypsy being a coach and constantly moving. (How long does he stay at Florida?) Had a fun presentation with Coach's corner with Gregg Brandon, Scott Paluch, Louis Orr, Curt Miller, and Denise Van De Walle responding to questions. They talked about the unique situation of coaches that actually interact here at BG. Also had several current athletes available to talk with. Even Josh Harris and Cole Magner where there. (They spent a lot of time talking with Urban.) Urban donated several items including a trip to a game at the "swamp" including airline, hotel, tickets, and signed shirts and football. Very worthwhile event.

Wow...sounds like a great recap! Over $100,000.....NICE.

I played in the Falcon Bash at Forrest Creason. Other than the rain, it was a fun day, and the dinner/reception afterwards was a great time as well. I think the Falcon Bash is a great way to raise a big chunk of money. It was announced that it raised $100,000…..I think it will do better each year……as Greg said “it’s a start”.

However…..

I am very opposed, and have been very vocal about the decision to eliminate all the other golf outings/fundraisers in leu of this one outing. I have been participating in the women’s basketball outing since Jaci Clark was coach. I helped build it when Curt first came to BGSU, and it has become a date many of us mark off on our calendars as soon as Brandi sets the date each year. I also have played in Falcon Ladies Day for many years, and last year I played in the football outing at Toledo CC and in the women’s golf outing.

I played in the Falcon Bash for two reasons. 1 – Because a coach asked me to play on her team and 2 – because you can’t complain if you haven’t experienced it first hand. For the record……I have NO complaints about the Falcon Bash itself.

I strongly disagree with Mr. Christopher’s decision to throw away tradition. Since I don’t know who any of you are, I will ask, have any of you ever played in the women’s basketball outing, or in Falcon Ladies day? If so, how many of the people who faithfully play in those other outings did you see at the Falcon Bash? I think I might have seen 10 familiar faces from those outing.

The door has been slammed on the “little guy”……people who play because of the friendship they feel at the individual outings. People who have no relationship to BGSU except these outings (women’s bball in particular). People who support BGSU athletics, but can’t justify the cost of even $175 on the low end. All that money is gone, but more importantly, so is the support, the tradition, the camaraderie and being able to interact with the coaches and the players. If you’ve been there, you know what I’m talking about. And all that translates into money….not only at the outing, but when these participants turn into fans and pay to come to a game, or participate in another function or outing. You have to have money to run a great athletic program.....but a strong fan base is important too. Big money might give you a great facility, but it doesn't put fans in the seats....unless you have a winning program all the time.

The Falcon Bash caters to the “big money” guys. “Just give us a ton of money, and we won’t bother you anymore”. We need big money and I’m not opposed to change. Greg Christopher was not hired to continue doing everything just as it has always been done. His forte' is fundraising, and I don't doubt he will be successful. I’ll play in the Falcon Bash again because I think is serves a purpose in raising a lot of money. But, in the end, I think as much good was lost, as gained.

WBBFAN, excellent comments. First off, I am so glad you played in the event. I too had a blast and I was asked by several coaches/ath folks to participate. I have supported (though not always officially played) at many, many outings for BG sports. I love to support a number of sports because I can do some of that and because I enjoy meeting different Falcon fans. But It is impossible for me to actually get to these deals and hard to even keep track of the support opportunities.

I agree with you that this Bash event will grow. I see this over time becoming an event where a group of fans of, say, women's bball, could gather in mutiple foursomes and/or at the dinner and have a great time. They can also talk to all the wbb coaches at some point(s) during the day as they are there. And they can also meet other Falcon fans/coaches of other sports. I can't remember the minimums to play in the various events, but I didn't think the Bash ruled out too many folks. Maybe you can remind me of the cost for one person at the Bash and one person for WBB outing or football outing.

The event seemed to raise a bunch of money from what I heard- and with the ability to designate $ of Falcon Club to certain desired sport, I think the member can impact his/her sport in their falcon Club donation too.

I don't like to lose tradition. I agree. But I know it is very, very difficult for some to be in multiple events- and many do want to do this even at minimum levels as opposed to big money folks. So one big event can be very helpful to busy backers. Knowing Curt and the staff, they will take super care of all their supporters in other ways. And I know they met plenty of new backers at the Bash. And you are right- it is a new day for funding athletic depts. It is a new reality. We need to find a balance and I thought, for a first try, that this event was an excellent effort.

We do need as many folks as possible to take your view. Give it a chance and let's move 18 sports 1 team forward. See you at the games.

I am glad the event went off as well as it did. Hopefully BO did not embarass himself to much since my terrible game was not there to make his look good. I was under the impression that any sport could do their own outing, but were asked to schedule it in either July or August. Perhaps I am wrong, but I was sure that is how it worked. I would love to play in some outing for BG athletics, but distance and finances at this time prevent that from happening. I am sure this event will grow and make lots of money in the future.

Suprised folks that embrace the PISS-POOR decision to change the logo are some how bothered this stupid change as well.
Each sport deserves a chance to raise money.

FalconFan1 - the cost of the wbb outing was something like $85. The outing at Forrest Creason was $175 and at Stone Ridge it was $300. The outing at Stone Ridge pretty much took the place of the Football outing at Toledo Country Club....where it was about the same price.

It's A Journey - originally yes, they said that each coach could do their own thing as early as August. Why would they want to? Coach Brandon has better things to do in August, and the wbb coaches finally get a month off the road for family and vacation. It's not practical. And, quite frankly.....if I were the coaches, I'd probably be relieved!

I'll get off my soapbox. It's a done deal.

Oh, and MACMAN.....I also agree with you about the logo. Even though I'm getting used to it, the original will always be my preferred one.
