BGSU Summer Voyage Report

Post by BGSU33 »

I made my annuals summer voyage back to Bowling Green this past Sunday. I strolled out to the stadium to take a look at the progress of the new video/scoreboard. There really wasn't much new going on from what was last reported. The new top piece of the board was just sitting on the ground. Despite it looking like a solid front piece, it's actually more of a tightly pulled mesh front, like a windscreen, with the new BG logo. It appears this is where the speakers will reside in the new project. The ground was dug up and that was about all to report.

I was trying to imagine what the new SAC would look like, but couldn't place which end zone it was going to sit in. Does anyone know if it is going to go in the north or south end zone? If it's in the south, then the tents will obviously come back out, but I assume it will have to be built lower than the new video/scoreboard. If it's the north, would they move the current north bleachers to the south end zone? Let me know what you all may be aware of.

One thing that really jumped out to me that could be a very nice improvement to the stadium was to replace those old wooden bleachers in the north end zone with some nice closed-in (not open air like the wooded one) aluminium seating that could help "close" the open feel to that side of the stadium. Those bleachers are in pretty poor shape.

I could tell where some of the rails were painted and it looked a lot better than the pink rails we all know so much about. There is still a lot of pink railings out there however. It looks like part of the underside of the stadium were painted orange somewhat recently which was a nice touch. I wouldn't mind seeing some more painted out there. It just looked better instead of the grey cement everywhere.

I saw the new banners in Anderson Arena, but that was about all that looked liked it change. No surprise there.

For those of you in the area, you already know this, but there is a ton of construction going on with Wooster Road (I think that's the road name) running all along the south side of campus. It started out by the I-75 bridge and ran all the way past Founders Quad. It was an eye-sore to see that much construction going on along the entire side of campus, but I guess it was needed. It appears they are putting in more driving lanes, is that correct for those of you that know?

One thing that becomes more and more clear to me every time I come back to campus is, especially after visiting other schools, it sure would be nice for BGSU to plant more trees on campus. For a school so flat, it would really help our campus look better with some more trees around the place. I think that would be a very nice addition. It looks like we may have lost even more trees with the widening of the road onto the edge of campus.

Unfortunately, the bookstores (on and off campus) were closed because it was a Sunday in the summer, and I couldn't buy anything while I was in town. But I looked into the windows, and there is a lot of good looking new BG gear for sale. There's a lot of stuff that isn't posted online. It's worth checking out.

Before we left town, we made a stop at Frickers where we polished off a ton of wings! I always craved Frickers wins when I come to town.

Thanks for the update 33. I always love going back to BG. With football, hoops and hockey, I'd say I make it back 9 or 10 times a year...which ain't enough!

The construction now isn't too bad actually. For awhile it was just one lane and they were stopping traffic coming one way to let the traffic from the other way go through. From the looks of it, they still have another 2"-4" of road to lay down. With school starting soon, I am glad I live off campus! Move in day is going to be a mess with the roads like this.

About the trees...it seems like everytime we have a bad storm, we lose a few here and there. I hardly ever see any being replanted so the number of them is going down on campus steadily. I heard rumors they were going to widen the road that used to go all the way through campus (the one by Anderson Arena). If they ever do that, think of all the trees along there that will have to be removed. My only hope is that maybe they can try to place them somewhere else.

I believe they are supposed to be done August 2005. I am glad that I am done with the mass move in days, that is going to be a pain in the a@@ for the new students. I expect to see a lot of ticked off parents.

It should definately look a lot nicer when people get off the interstate, especially for people making their first visit.

Move in day is going to be a royal pain in the butt this season, but honestly this is something that HAD to be done. On your typical Friday evening it was like sitting in a parking lot going up & down Wooster St. This is an improvement that was needed, and unfortunately when you do something like this you have to ride out the bad times to wait for the eventual reward. I'm sure that NEXT year's move in will be the smoothest in the past 15 years.

It doesn't help that move in weekend seems to coincide w/ the National Tractor Pulls every year either

I know a guy on the crew and he said there is an outside shot that they could have all the work done this year yet. That sure would be nice. I can't imagine a year and a half of work to widen a road. :?

Man I hope they don't widen the road by Anderson Arena, that would really eat up a bunch of tress. :( I actually think that road looks beautiful because of them. I hope this doesn't happen. Can you tell I am a tree-lover? Still, BG could really use a good dose of trees on campus.

I've heard they are well ahead of schedule on Wooster as well, the final touches look as though they'll take awhile, but otherwise things look like they are coming along.

The real gain is the addition of turn lanes at various points. That alone will smooth things over some. I don't see an end to traffic being backed up, but it will roll along quicker at least.

The tree loss wasn't as bad as I expected, and the elimination of the overhead wires will be a huge improvement. As the University buys out the houses on Wooster, I expect even more improvements.

About the SAC, the plan as I heard it was to put it to the north, basically closing off that end of the stadium. In the south end, they would have to deal with the scoreboard. I can't see that happening.

Also, is the SAC even a for sure thing? I believe they are expecting to build it at this point. They just don't know when. Fundraising has started, as I recall.
