$226MM to upgrade Michigan Stadium

Don't get me wrong, comparing UofM athletics to BG athletics is like comparing a...well before I get in trouble, you know what I mean. But Michigan is upgrading their hole in the ground for $226 Million and we can't figure out how to build a brand new basketball building for $100 Million? I'm sorry, that's unaccetable.

Not to be a jerk, but you sort of said it all right there. Michigan is a larger school in a larger conference with more high-profile athletic alumni (some who have recently won Super Bowl rings, and one late former president). To use their fundraising ability to compare to ours is just as you said, unreasonable.

I realize we should be able to raise more money than we currently do, but AD Christopher is in the early stages of super-charging our fundraising efforts and trying to take us to higher levels in the competition for funds and facilities.

Until we've got numerous alumni with wallets as bottomless as those that Michigan has, we're not going to be able to raise that sort of money that quickly.

I have faith (whether justified or not) that Christopher is taking the necessary steps to start us in the right direction, all it takes is time.

Who knows man , 226 mill is probably chump change to UM when you charge $50 a ticket and you average about 110,000 every home game for at at least 6-7 home games in in some years maybe 8. I know, its depressing.

Ticket sales for U of M football program alone eclipses BG's sales for all sports by better than 50%. It's also a third of their total departmental income.

It makes for sound business to put that kind of money into their anchor facility.

Michigan was #1 in attendance last year with a 110,026 average over 7 home games. Stats like this make it exciting when we beat them or their conference foes on the field!

Our competition really isn't Michigan. If we enjoyed the revenues of the BCS, Big 10 Network and the aformentioned ticket and sponsorship sales, we'd be doing the same thing.

The goal is to beat Kent, Miami and that halfway house on Bancroft Street. As long as our spending is comprable (another subject discussed a while back) and orientated towards crushing them, I'm happy. :-)

Well said, Joe. I'm told all the time at work how BG wouldn't be able to compete with the top teams of the B 11 on a regular basis. No kidding...we don't have the revenue, facilities and media pull the B 11 does. If BG were in the B 11, we would have somewhat comparable facilities to most of those schools.

70 days....

I agree completely. It's something that BG should have done with the ice arena at the height of the program. Adding the seating was a start, but nothing has been done by the school since then (the new offices and alumni room were funded purely by private donations). Instead they let it deteriorate to it's current condition and the program has suffered because of it. It's one of the busiest buildings on campus due to it's use by the public as well as the university, and yet....

BTW, i didn't mean to hi-jack this thread but it's something I've been saying for a long time. From a purely business perspective NOT putting $ back into that facility for as long as they did made no sense.

Facilities.......

I don't know about anyone else, but I have recently wondered why we are just now trying all at once to get all of our major facilities in order now. We should've have done at least some medium sized improvements to each major facility over the last 25-30 years instead of boom, now trying to do something when just about every other Mac shool has done something to their facilities for years now and recently as well. Thing is if we had an AD in years past that was passionate as GChris is now about trying overhaul to everything, like say back in the eighties , maybe we wouldn't be talking about our poor rundown AA or no athletic facilities at the Doyt or better ice for hockey. Maybe the fans & alumns back then didn't care about this stuff or we maybe the AD really had no money back then, who knows. I know this is a bunch of hindsight is 20/20 and whatnot but I had to mention it.

To add, I would argue that it is the ice arena and not the Doyt which is (or at least should be) BG's anchor facility.

The Ice Arena is the anchor...it's attached to a chain that's looped around the neck of the hockey program

it would not just be a matter of being in the tenleven.....its a matter of removing the discriminatory BCS, and implementing a playoff between conference champions. You do that, the lure for recruits to ride the bench at UM goes way down when they could actually compete for a national championship, decided on the field of play not by the morons who vote, then pit their

I dont two favorites against each other in some asinine bowl match up and call it a championship.
Free d1 from cage of the BCS and you will see big changes in just afew short years.
I dont know if Bosie could have beaten FL last year, but they sure as heck fire would have tore up Ohio State.
PLAYOFFS NOW! End discrimination
