2004 signing day...how about those kids?

I did one of these for the 2003 class a few months ago...let's see what 2004 looks like three years after signing day

Name Pos Ht Wt

Andrew Allen LB 6-1 220

Diyral Briggs DE 6-4 200

Andrew Campbell OL 6-4 265

Brandon Curtis DL 6-2 280

Nicholas Davis DL 6-3 280

Erique Dozier DB 6-1 195

Jeffrey Fink OL 6-5 260

Scott Goodwin DB/LB 6-3 205

John Haneline LB 6-2 225

Edwin Hood RB/Ath. 5-10 185

Aaron Kent OL 6-6 265

Lance Latkiewicz DL 6-2 282

Brandon Mack DL 6-5 245

Corey Partridge DB 5-11 180

Marques Parks WR 5-11 192

Joe Schaefer DE 6-4 250

Anthony Turner QB 6-2 1/2 218

Nate Waldron DB 5-11 195

Peter Winovich QB/Ath. 6-3 230

Allen never actually enrolled here. The spring after signing, he received a scholarship to an Ivy League school and decided to pursue that opportunity.

Briggs has progressed nicely. He’s a very disruptive force on the edge. The fact that he’s now listed at 230lbs should make falconboy at least a little happ. He should be an all Mac candidate the next two years.

Campbell played a bit as a true freshman before blowing out. I forget why…

Curtis played a year at DT before being moved to the OL. He currently sits atop the depth chart at RG

Davis should be one of the anchors on the DL. Much will depend on his ability to return from injuries that limited him to three games lat year. He still managed to rack up 19 tackles, including two for a loss. That’s almost insane production from a DT in our system that funnels the action to the LB and Safeties. I hop e for big things form him…

Dozier is our top returning LB and arguably most intimidating defender. He’ll make the big hit, but he also makes a smart, fundamentally sound tackle. 2nd on the team in tackles last year, he also drops well into pass coverage and has the speed to cover RB’s and the strength to deal with TE’s. Another All Mac level player.

Fink started 10 games last year and currently is number 2 on the depth chart at RG. Didn’t notice him much last year…that’s a good thing to say about an OL, I guess.

Goodwin was moved to offense and quit last year

Haneline is up against Loren Hargrove for the starting WLB spot. He started 10 games last year and played well finishing with 74 tackles. He’s a solid player who seems to have a nose for the ball.

Hood bounced between offense and defense and was never able to crack the three depp, IIRC. He l;eft last year…I think.

Kent is listed as the back up at LT behind one of the “5 blocks of granite”, Drew Nystrom. Has not seen the field to date, IIRC

Latkiewicz is probably THE “might have been” kid form the last few years. He looked to be capable of contributing early on, but had to quit the team his freshman year due to an abnormality in his heart. Thankfully, it was caught before the story moved from sad to tragic

Mack has bounced between OL and DL. Had some nice moments at DT alongside Briggs in 2005, but the decision was made to move him to OT in 2006. Injuries along the DL brought him back over later in the year. Hopefully, he can settle in on the OL and provide some depth in his SR season.

Parks progress has been limited by injury and inconsistency. Listed as a starter at the “X” WR, he needs to limit his drops or he may be passd up by the likes of Davis, Pronty and Charles. An off filed incident in downtown BG could be a cuase for concern.

Partridge…. His dad tailgates with us…that alone earns him major points. Great hands, smart player, good speed. Seemed to be in the coach’s dog house for some Godforsaken, mysterious reason early last year. He shook off that senseless harassment (Ok, I’m pandering and going overboard now) and became the latest in a long line of excellent WR’s at BGSU. And we have him for two more years.

Schaefer showed some promise in 2005 but injuries made him a non factor last year. If healthy, he could push starter Hardwick at DE.

Turner….if I could pick a word to describe AT it would be frustrating. He has loads of talent, coming out of HS he was pegged as a top 50 QB by everyone from Rivals to Scout to Phil Steele. (Steele had him at #36) He’s been hampered by an off the field issue, injuries and inconsistency with his reads and throws. Completion % has been hampered by some drops…but he needs to be quicker with his reads and more accurate with his throws or he will spend the next two years watching Glaud, Sheehan and Brown battle it out.

Waldron began his career as a DB, moved to RB last year. Saw a lot of duty on special teams last year, but does not appear anywhere on the three deep.

Winovich Bounced around a bit his first couple of years from TE to LB. Seems to have found his niche as a blocking FB who has the athleticism to gain some yards as a change of pace ball carrier. If Brandon and McCall make good on their promise top open the offense back up, his role could be reduced next year.

So…We have a decent mix of all Mac quality guys like Partridge, Briggs, and Dozier and solid contributors like Winovich, Haneline, Curtis and Davis. And some talented but frustrating guys lie Parks and Turner. Three guys really blew out ( Goodwin, Hood and Campbell) and two left for “just cause” (injury and better opportunity).

On balance, this class looks pretty good. If Davis and Schaefer can reestablish themselves from their injuries, it will be thought of as a very good class. Although…if Turner doesn’t pan out, it will seem disappointing…

FWIW, Vandelay had us behoind Toledo and Marshall, bt as usual, many of Toledo's marquee names blew out early on and really...who gives a f**k about Mooshall

Great post with excellent detail and analysis. I'm on board with your overall assessment, too. Turner would be key. A good or very good year from him and folks may talk about the 2004 class for quite a while.

Dozier & Briggs from the same class makes me pretty happy. I'm a big fan of their play. Briggs is real quick around the outside & Dozier is the best fundamental defender we have.

Partridge is definitely an all MAC caliber player from this class as well.

Overall I think it was a pretty solid class...I just wish AT would come close to living up to his billing.
