I have not heard what attendance was at last night's UT/Miami game. Did they state it on ESPN? The box score on the Redhawks website either has attendance blank or at zero.

I am assuming most of us feel that attendance is important for all MAC games for the overall health of the conference. Miami Officials were saying they needed 15,000 last night.

That depends if he ate those people before they entered the gates or after they entered the stadium.

I think attendance is handled by the same guy that runs their scoreboard.

I'll give him credit though. Running the scoreboard at Miami has to be hard. I mean not only do you have to keep the out of town scores rolling, but also updates on used BMW values and Martha Stewart Tips!

Miami will be on probation. They are reporting an average of 13,269 for the year.

Thanks for the links. This does not bode well for the MAC. Miami is a traditionally strong program - football and basketball both. Miami struggles to fill their basketball venue also.

The questions may become:

Is TV hurting attendance at MAC games?

Do mid-week games hurt the MAC?

How does losing Div !-A status hurt other sports like basketball, hockey and the minor sports? Do those programs have to drop out of Div 1-A?

This may damage a lot of good programs. Think about the money spent on venues and so on at MAC schools. This could all be for not.

TV attendance probably hurts no more than it helps. Having the game on ESPN probably excites alot of people to get out and see it, and helps promote that there IS a game that day, though I'm sure there are plenty of other people that think "Its a weeknight, lets just drink some beers at home and watch it." So I think its hard to say which direction that goes.

Midweek games are the same thing, at least as far as a campus like BG goes. Having games in the middle of the week guarantees that the students will be in town, unlike the weekends, but with late lectures and meetings for various organizations around campus in the evening, that probably hurts attendance some, too.

As for the last part, nope, losing D-1A status in football shouldn't affect other sports. Look no further than Dayton. D-2 in football, D-1A in basketball. And there are PLENTY of schools that play D-1 hockey that are in much lower divisions for all other sports.

I don't think TV is a big issue, But I do think that weekday games hurt. Limited Almuni attendance and like TG said, late lectures, work due the next day, exams, etc. will hurt weeknight attendance...

in this article it reports just under 14,000 in attendence last night.

If ESPN/ESPN2 and Fox SportsNet would black out these games in the local area it would certainly help.

I am sure the election had to hurt Miami's turnout quite a bit last night also. There were more Ohioans interested in this election than ever before.

moreover, we don't seem to do well in non-Saturday games.(excluding MCB). all the more reason to stay with Saturdays.
