They are not one of the top 25 teams in Division1. I have my doubts that they're one of the top 100 teams in Division 1.
They have no business anywhere near those rankings.

I could be wrong, but wasn't the allowance for FCS teams granted _after_ the polls were released?
So if they squeak by a D-II team this weekend, nobody will likely give them a vote.

I'm pretty sure that change was made after the poll was released.
Assuming that ASU wins on Saturday, I think they will get a couple token votes at #25. However, I tend to agree with hammb here - winning at Michigan was really impressive, but it is ridiculous to think that ASU is anywhere near a top 25 team in all of D-I.

The ESPN talking heads, the Lenior-Rhyne coach, and others have gone way overboard with App. St. love. Both the Lenior-Rhyne coach and Jim Donnan said that App. St. is the best team in North Carolina and that App. St. is better than many 1A teams. Their arguments always start like this: "Appalachian State is the two-time defending 1-AA champ...." What they fail to mention (or simply don't know) is that App. St. was blown-out by Kansas and beaten by sub-.500 NC St. during those championship years.
DI AA not DII

It really starting to annoy me how many posts this week (on this site and others) refer to App. St. as DII. They are DI-AA (by the old division title). DII is the likes of Findlay, Tiffin and Ashland (App. St. is equivalent to Youngstown State).
It is also annoying to see Mid-Major fans bashing a DI-AA for thinking about getting into the top 25. This is the same argument that is used by the BCS fans to keep Mid-Majors out of the BIG MONEY Bowls.
If they can beat the No. 5 team in the polls then they deserve the opportunity to voted among the top 25 whether or not they are legit top 25 or not.

They don't play in the same league so it shouldn't count. BG isn't 1-0 in the Big10. Yes it was awesome we beat Minn & it counts on our record, but not towards a Big10 conference Title. Ok now change conference to league and you have my explanation on why they shouldn't be ranked!

Slow down, Jack. Appalachian State
does play a D-II team this weekend.
Grizzly Adams
did have a beard.

There's a difference between us arguing that some of our teams belong near the top of our division and arguing that a 1AA school belongs near the top of a division ahead of them.
Appy State is a 63 scholarship school compared to 117 85 scholarship schools. They are not better than more than a handful of those teams. They beat one because that team totally overlooked them and didn't show up to play.
That team is not nearly as talented as the teams in the top 25, and they aren't even as talented as BG. They are a lower division school. They'll go to the 1AA playoffs, possibly win it all again, and be happy. They are just not one of the 25 best teams in D1 football.

App State beat a pre-season ranked #5 team not worthy of top 25 ranking (evidenced by this week's poll). The discussion shouldn't be why App State didn't get any points but rather how the hell did Michigan warrant the pre-season ranking to begin with ! For a team with supposedly a strong defense in '06 to end the season getting lit up by Ohio State and USC, and losing their best players to the NFL they shouldn't have smelled the top 15 till they earned on it the field. Michigan hasn't won a game since Schembechler died !!

I'm neutral on this subject but saw this article and thought it was relevant:

They played like a top 25 team but I don't see any way they could do it consistently like a top 25 team did. Give them an A+ for effort, though, they worked as hard as a top 5 team should.

I would have voted for them.

The discussion should be why the hell do they release polls before October? (Which leads to discussion of why Michigan might be ranked that high.) And they lost a number of good players to the pros, but I don't know that "all their best" players went to the NFL.
Of course, I'm still wondering when either of these schools are on our schedule this year.

And I've seen posts this week suggesting a DII school should not be ranked in the DI poll.
