Week 3 game balls...

1) Coach Mike Ward. What he said in the locker room at the half needs to be bottled. He challenged his D unit to step it up and they came out in the 2nd half and put on a clinic. Temple isn't Michigan State but the D just rocked that Owl offense. This D is coming together nicely despite some injuries and a disciplinary episode.

2) Anthony Turner. Why AT? Cuz when his number was called, he stepped on to the field and contributed to the team. It's tough to watch from the sidelines knowing you can help your team. I know cuz it happened to me in HS. I was demoted as a starter to a back up and the feeling sucks. AT came in and ripped off some nice runs and ended up producing 36 yards and a 9 ypc average. That shows even though his PT has greatly diminished, his head is still in the game. That's a winner's attitude. Way to be, AT!

3) Sinisa Vrvilo-the kid seems very comfortable with his PAT's and FG's. Now his kickoffs? They need work but I think with us not wanting to kick to Shelton, he had a rough day kicking off. But I am very confident anytime he lines up to a try a kick, he'll make it.

I usually only mention 3 game balls but I wanted to give a shout out the WR corps. FB is unstoppable. CP was back and played well as usual. Marques Parks looks great so far and it's nice to see him come back from a broken leg and step up his game. Derek Brighton has made an impact so far. Tyrone Pronty snagged 3 more balls yesterday and is another youngster stepping up. Willie Geter looks great catching the ball out of the backfield. Jermiah Kelley and Chris Wright caught passes yesterday. The WR unit is becoming a very strong unit.

Anyone else have thoughts?

I'm not sure why we needed to try and pin the ball against the sideline so much. The couple times we kicked to them, we pinned them at the five, and were set to pin them real deep again but the kid fumbled and we got a touchdown. I didn't understand why we were afraid to kick to them after that. Then again, I couldn't see as much as I usually can and my judgement may be off.

It's interesting, because the appearance is that Turner is now in the No. 3 spot. They brought in Glaud first.

Brandon denies it, though. From today's Blade:

ANTHONY ONE AND TWO: Brandon said Anthony Turner is still the team's No. 2 quarterback, even though freshman Anthony Glaud was given the first opportunity to replace Tyler Sheehan. Neither back-up attempted a pass, although Turner ran the ball four times for 36 yards.

"We wanted to play AG because he deserves to play," Brandon said. "[Turner] got in there, ran the ball, and did a nice job of that. Those guys have a role on this football team, and we're going to continue to use those guys throughout the season. We're going to need them; it's a long haul."

1. Diyral Briggs. The crowd was dead silent in a 28-21 ball game, and he made a HUGE sack on an otherwise ordinary drive. Then the crowd started going crazy after that and I think helped force that fumble in the endzone and get the lead up to 35-21.

2. Kenny Lewis. Temple had a chance to take the lead to start the 2nd half, and he made THEE play of the game. I've complained more than anyone on this site about finding a replacement for Keon Newson. That kid made so many forced fumbles & INT's it was insane. Kenny reminded me a bit of him today for the 1st time! CLUTCH

3. Sinisa Vrvilo. 2 beautiful FG's made that really helped keep momentum on our side after our O stalled. Made all of his PAT's and had all of his "non corner kick" type of kickoffs go into the endzone, one which resulted in a fumble and a quick TD for us!

Anybody notice the game Adrian Baker had? He seemed to be around the ball all day long. Looks like he is really coming around and helping this defense grow. Just another one of those guys that did a great job Saturday.

1) Erique "Bull" Dozier: 12 tackles in the game, Erique was flying on both special teams and on defense. His play this year will more than likely garner him as a Top 3 OLB in the MAC. He and Haneline together accounted for 22 tackles, which is outstanding. LB's will be a strength as the season plays along.

2) Sinisa Vrvilo: Man, what a great find by Brandon and the coaching staff. It's great to see someone who is consistent on FG's, XP's and can get the ball to the end zone. His 2 deep kicks of the game led to a huge stop on Temple's own 13 and a fumble where Shelton took it out of the end zone. ST's win you games, and Sinisa will be very instrumental in more wins this season.

3) Freddie Barnes: 2 TD's, 9 grabs and close to 100 yards receiving, FB is helping to take the load off CP while he still gets past the ankle, and giving guys like Parks the chance to go against lesser DB's and catch some important balls. The guy is a playmaker and he reminds me of a Hawkins type WR with a bit more raw talent.

It was great to see the ST improvement and D in the 2nd half. I think those 2 facets of the game showed just what this team can do this year if they remain focused and committed.

Actually, I don't think any of his kick reached the endzone. I think the 5 was the deepest he got one.

Wrong. One kick went into the endzone. It was pretty much a low, line driver that landed in the endzone, was bobbled and run out.

The opening kickoff of the second half was booted 6 yards deep and Shelton brought it out. I don't remember where Shelton fielded the one that he fumbled.

So many big plays today.

Tough to argue about Ward. He certainly got the defense fired up for the second half - Baker, Briggs, Lewis ... they all just kept bringing it throughout the game. Sean O made a couple of key plays, I kept hearing Haneline mentioned on tackles. Whew, our D looked very, very tough.

Both kickers did the job Saturday. It all looked so fluid and easy.

On offense - Sheehan, Barnes, Partridge, Parks, etc. Our arsenal is growing. Geter will be a player. It's tough to believe he's only a freshman. He could be scary-good before it's all said and done.

From the play-by-play:
1st Kick: Sinisa Vrvilo kickoff for 64 yards (to the 6) returned by Travis Shelton for 7 yards to the Temp 13, tackled by Roger Williams and Dan Macon.

2nd Kick: Sinisa Vrvilo kickoff for 66 yards (to the 4) returned by Travis Shelton for 9 yards to the Temp 13, fumbled at the Temp 13, forced by Jahmal Brown, recovered by Darius Smith.

3rd Kick (Pop-up): Sinisa Vrvilo kickoff for 48 yards returned by Daryl Robinson for 10 yards to the Temp 32, tackled by P.J. Mahone and Kenny Lewis, Bowling Green penalty 5 yard offside on Diyral Briggs accepted.

4th Kick (Start of 2nd Half): Sinisa Vrvilo kickoff for 75 yards (5 yards into the end zone) returned by Travis Shelton for 21 yards to the Temp 21, tackled by Diyral Briggs and Jahmal Brown. This was the lone kick into the endzone.

The next two kicks were Pop-ups for 41 and 42 yards with the later going out of bounds.

The remaining kicks were all squibs or pop-ups that went to the 12, 11 (Out of bounds) and the 22.

NOTE: I had to edit a couple of these as the play-by-play was evidently not using the 30 as the kick-off point and was still using last year's 35.

I don't expect kickoffs into the endzone since they moved the line back.

In fact, they didn't change from the 35 to the 40 on the starting position for an OOB kick, so I'd probably think seriously about intentionally kicking all the kicks out of bounds.

I thought that he only kicked 2 deep and that they both reached the endzone. Apparently 1 of them did go 5 yards deep and the other one got fumbled and we scored on the next play. See how easily my reality turned into a dream come true?

Saturday was the best kick off performance I have seen by a Falcon in years.

I know that must be tuff for not only AT but for other players like Ransom, Bullock and many others. All I can say is just hang in there you never no what can happen in football and all they have left to play is those guys.
