Back in Philly with LOTS of Falcon pride!

A few thoughts from the Philly contingent ...
* Tailgating, though early, was un-FALCON-believable. Hats off to Fanatic & BGFan for the gracious use of the B!G AZZ camper as a base of operations. Great turnout overall, in the lot. Lots of vehicles, lots of folks enjoying the beautiful morning.
* Good lord, does The Doyt look fantastic with the Sebo and the new turf, not to mention the other cosmetic improvements. My in-laws watched the game back in Philly and commented on just how nice things looked!
* Attendance - about 17K sounds right, given what we saw. The lack of groups in "Tent City" makes me think that not enough muscle was put behind getting non-students to the game.
* Speaking of the students, hats off to our future alumni! They had a strong turnout. Better yet, there was little scarlet & gray and LOTs of orange! Not to mention the students near us were extremely vocal. I loved it!
* The FMB was fantastic. Noah's assessment - "It's the best they ever sounded."
* This is a different team. They played wire-to-wire with intensity.
* We have a lot of playmakers on both sides of the ball, which we haven't been able to say for a few years.
* Our kicking game is night & day from last year. Heck, the last two years.
* The game wasn't as close as the final score indicated. We could have scored at least two more TDs and easily held off at least their last one - if they didn't keep their first string in against our third string ... and use their timeouts. I understand where Golden was coming from - I'm sure he was trying to show his team that they should never give up. But still.
* Loved being on the field after the game! Thank you, Mr. Christopher, for keeping this awesome tradition alive. Caught up with BGSUFN, too - the man who made Project Falcon a reality, for which we are eternally grateful!
* Also loved that the team exits fron the Sebo Center now. Very nice. Lots of autographs, etc. because our coaches and players really know how to show appreciation for the fans. I LOVE that about our program.
* Good times hanging out after the game in the tailgate area. Of course, it all ended too soon for most of us!
* Great trip home with lots of folks asking how BG did. I was thrilled to recount the whole thing.
Thanks to all! It was an AWESOME trip! Pictures to come shortly ...

Great stuff. I think it was you that had the bell? If it was then we gotta get you to come to more games, because you made more noise than anyone on EVERY 3rd down! Glad you get to start a new streak now against the same team that ended it!

Gotta love the "Ay Ziggy Zoombells"! They ARE loud, that's for sure. Wish we were able to make more of them ... maybe next year?
Funny, but sad, story: On the first third down, Noah and I both stood up and rang our fool heads off. After the play, the lady in front of Noah swung around and barked "Would you stop ringing that near my head!"
Were both stunned. I simply moved Noah out to the aisle (we were on the end - seats 1 & 2) and told him to jump in the aisle on third down and make as much noise as he wanted to make. Which, of course, he did.
Freak - man, what a great time! Hope you all make it out next year so we can return all the hospitality!
BGSUFootballFan: Have to admit, that helped wipe away that ugly memory from last year!

I have to say I'm not at all surprised that happend to you. I REALLY wanted to go crazy too, but people make you look and feel so awkward even if you stand up and clap. Holy dang this is a FOOTBALL GAME people, they are the ones who are being socially awkward! I couldn't believe people just sat there so quietly, there is more noise from students in my lecture classes. Stand up and cheer for by God, and if you're not going to then PLEASE DON'T BE ANNOYED by those who do!
I don't know what the answer is either. There was a lady in the parent section going crazy on every play & trying so hard to get other people to stand up and make noise. I wanted to give that lady a hug. If we had a few more people like her, I think the standing up and making noise would have spread like wild fire, because there were a few occassions when it happend. I don't know if people are too shy or they don't want to for some reason, but I'd love to see everyone do what you and Noah did on at least ALL the 3rd downs!

Glad you made it back safely '87.
It was great to see you guys again, had a blast.
I agree we need more noise on 3rd downs in the stadium...

That lady was probably Mrs. Ward, Coach Mike's wife. She does that EVERY game, God bless her. I always tell the Freaklings to make as much noise as they want. I pay good money for our 4 seats every year and we'll make as much noise as we please. I've had people look at us with frowns but like you said, IT IS A FOOTBALL GAME!!!!! I refuse to let anyone around me tell me to quiet down. There are seats in other parts of the stadium if you don't like our cheering. A loud, raucous crowd gets the players pumped up and flying around. It's called the "HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE".
You want quiet? Go to the freakin' library.
87,
We will be looking to see what we can do next year! Always great to see you and Noah! The Streak is alive and well!!!!
GO FALCONS!

Freak:
Amen to that, brother!
BGSUFootballFan: Forget what others say/do. Do
your thing. Maybe it's a function of (my advancing) age, but who cares what everyone else thinks?
Last year at the Eastern Michigan game, folks around us were grumbling and glaring the whole time. You know what? Tough darts! I'm with Freak. I get to one game a year and I'm going to generate as much noise as I can. That's what Home Field Advantage is all about! And it's a pack thing. The more noise you make, the more likely someone else is to join in.
Another great tidbit from Saturday:
We were sitting in front of a group of Asian students (I suspect they were students, at least, judging from their apparent age). It must've been the first football game for some of them, because the one young man tapped me on the shouler early on and said, "excuse me, sir (man, do I love that!), how many chances does the team get to advance the ball?" I explained the basics of four downs and he thanked me. After that, it was like Noah & I had an echo. Every time we stood and screamed, so did they! And while they obviously didn't know all the words to Ay Ziggy Zoomba, they caught on to the "B-G-S-U" part real quick!
Oh, and they stayed until the VERY END!
So make all the noise you want!
Oh & Coach Ward's wife is awesome!

Thanks for the words of wisdom '87 Alum. I guess I just didn't want to step on anyones toes or get my own fans mad at me. We have enough trouble getting them to come as it is. I just wish we had more leaders in the crowd so that everyone would feel not just obligated, but actually excited to stand up and make some noise on 3rd down!
That's awesome that you were able to help some new fans catch on, that is exactly what we need, and exactly what I meant by a leader. In fact, maybe I'll follow your ways and see if I can't come up with some type of bell to bring to the next game I go to!

87 provided the Freaklings with a couple of the Zoombells last year. We rang the heck out of them Saturday and I know a couple people in front of us were ticked. Tough darts, as 87 would say. I like that phrase!
I just don't get people that sit there, do nothing and yet get all hacked off at others who are making noise. I just don't...and like 87 said, I DON'T CARE what they think. Do you think anyone at the Shoe complains when the OSU fans turn up the volume? How about Death Valley with LSU? Man, some stadiums just thrive on the decibel level.
NIU has that going for them...at least they did a couple years ago. Coach B kept talking about how loud Husky Stadium was the last couple times BG played there. That's what we can do at Perry Stadium. I'll be doing the same thing Sat night vs WKU....fair warning to those around our seats.
GO FALCONS!!!!!

This is why I love FalconFreak. I've said it before and I'll say it again , the only human cloning I could agree to would be of FalconFreak and his family. BG townies are a odd bunch. It seems as though the average middle-aged townie just doesn't have either the passion for Falcon football or maybe football in general as others do. I'd say we have what you call Michigan esque fans as far as the average townie that comes. There may be a 112,000 that show up in Michigan stadium but I for one believe that most if not all the noise that is made in the Big House comes from students. For some reason there just arn't many fans outside of students that in that middle-age demographic that like to get loud and rowdy.
I have no answer for how to fix this. Its just a fact of life at this moment.

You fix it by winning. You fix it by doing cool schiat they everyone likes to do. There is too much time to sit and be bored at our games. At the "big time" schools they are constantly entertaining the people in the seats. They're making strides towards that, but we havn't quite grasped it yet.

I am middle aged, loud and rowdy and proud of it!
We had the same problem with fans in the stands 20 years ago...it isn't new. They wanted us to sit down when exciting things were happening in the game. We were fortunate enough to be able to get a box on the West side so we can go as nuts as we want and FF1 and I won't argue with the "fans" in the stands every game.

I think the noon start perhaps made a difference.
With a 6 p.m. kick, and more time for tailgating, I think this next crowd will be a whole lot more stoked.
