Did anyone even bid on the BC auction? I saw one for $1,500 but thought it said reserve not met.

I understand they are trying to raise funds with big money items, but sadly I can't drop coin on stuff like that.

I was hoping they would many things on there, like old jerseys, or shorts, or other unique maybe even team-issue items.

Instead of just one luxury type item a week why not have multiple smaller items that would collectively raise a decent amount. I would be willing to guess there is "junk" sitting around in storage that many of us would bid on. I rolled my eyes a couple basketball seasons ago when they used one of the old, faded NCAA banners to sweep up broken backboard or something similar.

I agree. I think they should flat out sell that stuff, set up a tent at a football game with collectables. People would love old banners, jerseys, etc...to add to their collections and show off. I think they are droping the ball with their auctions thus far.

I don't know about dropping the ball, but your other ideas are definitely valid. They're likely testing the waters with some big ticket items, but would probaby be surprised how much they could bring in with a wider array of smaller items. Even old media guides and programs that they probably have stacks of somewhere would add up in a heartbeat, you're right. Not to mention opening up bidding to a whole world of other income levels. Even the "small items" in this series of auctions, such as the helmet they kicked it off with, start off too steep for many casual fans to think about, but if a $25 item was cool enough, I'd imagine it would creep into the $100's no problem.

Yep. When they said auction, I was thinking eBay-style "garage sale" auction, you know "EVERYTHING MUST GO"!

Like Dayon, I was hoping to pick up some small-ticket items to add to my collection. These big-ticket things are just way too rich for my blood.

I understand the big fundraising idea and must assume they did some sort of cost analysis that showed selling just a few big $ items would be better than a mass "garage sale" approach.

As for being on the sideline ... I must say that the year Krebs/Seeliger arranged for Noah to get on the sideline was an unforgettable experience. I mean, I spent a lot of time on sidelines covering sports, but for a kid, well, it's very, very cool.

I agree...I can't spend that kind of money. Mrs. Freak would hang me.

Old gear, pennants, media guides...stuff like that. Although I am quickly running out of room in the Freak Nest to put stuff.

I know there was a "second bid" of $1550, but last time I looked.... I'd agree with most on the board....they should think about stuff like old jersies(game worn- but still decent shape), even an old "used" football that could be painted orange and brown etc.

Perhaps someone who WORKS ON CAMPUS could mention these ideas to Greg Christopher..... do we know anyone like that?

Yea this new one is a big ol' flop, hopefully the athletic department gets the memo that they should start auctioning off memorabilia and not experiences.

I didn't think they were very clear on what the "experience" would be, and that was the fatal flaw.

It might come down to copywriting. I know I glanced at this latest auction, and the only concrete thing I could discern is that it would involve watching the game from the sideline.

And that would be cool. But $1,500 for that?

Part of the challenge for this particular auction is that games at Perry Stadium feel so intimate as it is. We get to line up and watch the team walk into the stadium. It's a small stadium, and if we want, we can watch from ground level in the south end zone. And, frankly, if I've got $1,500 to throw around on an auction like this, than I'm probably a big enough booster where Gregg Brnadon or Greg Christopher might take my telephone call once in a while. In other words, I might already feel like I have the access I want.

I don't think the lesson here is to auction stuff rather than experiences. Both could be good. But they might need to think through those experiences a bit more, then communicate them a bit more clearly.

The home experience is actually $250, the Boston College experience started at $1,500.

A little birdie told me they will eventually be auctioning off the pictures and old team photos and stuff that used to be on the walls in the old offices.....
