Akron beats WMU in wild finish

I hope there's highlights of this somewhere, but let me see if I can sort it out from the play by play...

WMU up 38-31 with just under 5 left, they punt to UA, who drives 70 yards to the WMU 7, 1st and goal, they throw 4 inc. passes.

WMU goes nowhere, and apparently takes an intentional safety, but leaves time on the clock, now up 38-33.

Akron returns the free kick 69 yards with no time left and wins 39-33.

Unreal.

Unbelievable. Although I believe the return was actually 89 yards (the free kick went 69 yards).

Akron seems like the real deal early on. Glad we get them at home.

That extra 20 yards probably makes the Broncos feel better..
Thank God the crossover games don't count, it makes it a little easier to laugh at other's misfortunes here...

Wow thats insane. My best "pick" against the spread this week was Akron +10, but I'm glad they won outright. Checkout these numbers from Jabari...

Ok... I can clear this one up.

There was too much time left on the clock for WMU to run it down, so they needed a first down, which they did not get. They ran the play clock down as much as they could on fourth down, then got penalized for delay of game. 20 seconds left in the game at this point. Not sure if they tried to take a timeout before the play clock expired or not. So the ball was at the 7 yard line and it was fourth and whatever (like 12). I think instead of risking having the punt blocked, they just took the safety. This ran 5 seconds off the clock, so there was 15 seconds for the kick.

They kicked. It went 69 yards, to the 11. #81 took it and ran to like the 19, and when he was about to go down (someone had him wrapped up), he lateraled the ball to #21. That dude took it and cut right and ran it back for the touchdown with no time left on the clock.

The end.

This was probably the most mind boggling game of saturday for us MAC followers. I was only tracking it via Gamecast at ESPN.com and assumed that when the screen refreshed it was somehow a mistake

I mean, sreiuosly, you are up by a touchdown with seconds left on the clock and you find a way to lose???? Bronco's fans must have been Royally PO'd walking out of there the other day.

On the local front, Akron's victory made it all of the way to page 3...so I wouldn't go so far as to call them the real deal just yet.

Not sure about the comment that cross over games don't count, because this victory still counts as a Conference win...and don't be surprised if everyone in the east has 1 conference loss and some of our most hated foes's have 2 already(Gloden Flashes and Solich!!). It's too soon to resort to the tie-breaker list but don't be surprised come mid-November that is what we'll be talking about.

For now, it's kind of simple. BEAT MIAMI!!

Here's the highlight with the Akron play-by-play to go with it. I think the color commentator got a little excited. Its the 4th selection down and says no image on the left side:

The crossover games dont count like they used to. They simply go towards the tie breaker now. So the only way they come into play is if a say 5-1 BG is tied with another 5-1 team. So yes they count but not as much as they used to.

That's an understatement. They both went a little overboard, I thought. Sounded like girls.

My favorite part of the video: After the touchdown, you can see Zippy, the kangaroo mascot, go waddling up to the end zone. He's very slow -- like a crippled dog -- and it seems to take an eternity.

Finally a players spots him ... and embraces him.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a college football player embrace a mascot before.

The play was amazing, certainly appropriate to go overboard in the situation, but as stated they did sound like little girls screaming at the start of High School Musical 2

The color guy's screaming reminds of when Howard Dean lost it out in Iowa a few years ago.

The Zips announcers are pretty brutal to listen to...I try to avoid them at all cost.

I like Todd Walker quite a bit. He calls a game professionally and has solid pipes on the air. The Zips announcers are the ultimate homers...

Great play, though. :D
