Miami to switch sidelines
Interesting thread about it in Oxford:
http://www.miamihawktalk.com/discussion ... hp?t=37909
Question:
Weren't our players actually struck by the occasional flying object in 2003?
I was digging around for threads on this -- but AZZ.com was revamped in 2004.
I don't want to make baseless accusations, but I see all these brie eaters making fun of this rule, how we don't want our feelings hurt, etc.
I thought our players' experience in 2003 went beyond Miami students' attempts to be clever with their mouths.
If objects were not thrown at our players, I'll stand corrected.

I found this article about the MU Fans etiquette in 'The Miami Student' newspaper. Interesting paragraph contains this quote:

Here is the link to the complete article, the quote is on the 2nd page.Heckling is completely acceptable. I do it at nearly every game I go to, much to the dismay of some of my closest friends.

I have heard of students throwing marshmallows -- once -- several years ago but don't recall any other reported incidents. Several years ago, Kent alleged that students had used "racial epithets," but upon detailed and systematic investigation by both grumpy MHT moderators and our AD, it was determined that the heckling in question related to Josh Cribbs's legal troubles, which to my mind became fair game since Laing Kennedy didn't impose any meaningful suspension on the kid.

In a conference where getting fans is next to impossible, where big crowds are few and far between and where there are bigger things to worry about than what fans are behind what benches, its a joke that Rick Chryst felt that this rule is needed.
So what is worse, the fact that students scream at players, or that your students know the phone number to the Opposing team's coach's box and use to call it during the game? OR what about your students and their proximity to the court at Anderson arena? What will you say if the MAC comes in and says no students may sit any closer than the first 15 rows of the court?
Why does it matter where students sit? Isn't it hard enough just to get them to show up?

I agree 100% about Anderson that shouldnt be allowed same about the coach's box. And I agree that the MAC should not have rules limiting where students sit, but they do so we all have to live with it.redskins4ever wrote:In a conference where getting fans is next to impossible, where big crowds are few and far between and where there are bigger things to worry about than what fans are behind what benches, its a joke that Rick Chryst felt that this rule is needed.

The student section was supposed to be right next to where the band was, that way it wouldn't look as bad as CMU did on TV. We don't really employ a whole lot of ushers, so a lot of people just ignored the switch.
And for the first quarter of that game, there were a lot of students there. The stadium was empty aside from the band, a few students, and the teams in teh second half.
