My goodness, what a trip...

This is was ate me up the whole, long, boring, anxious, semi-truck filled 4 hour ride home. How in the hell was this team unprepared for this game?
We knew this would be a tough game...MU's HC, Big Ben back in town and the tribute to Hoeppner really fired MU up. We seemed to be going thru the motions and, dare I say, not caring what happened? Seriously. With the Freaklings there, we ended up walking out of Yager with 8 min left. It was way too painful to keep watching and we both thought it would be best just to go. We always talk with the players after games but yesterday, I felt that wouldn't be the best idea. This is only the 2nd game I've ever left early...Kent last year was the first. We were gonna tailgate and grill some more in the lot so we didn't have to stop on the way home but some jackazz MU kid with a bullhorn was spewing obscenities all over the lot. Mrs. Freak and I decided it would be best to just go and that was a shame. We sat with Flip, Mrs. Flip and Flipperella...that was cool. There was a great group of orange there and to have to witness that was not fun at all.
I don't know what's happened the last two weeks, but we're at the proverbial crossroads of the season. Either we suck it up and get back to playing BOWLING GREEN FOOTBALL or we tank like 2006.
I could literally count on one hand the players that had a fire in their belly yesterday...and one thing that really pissed me off was Briggs stepping over the MU QB after a tackle late in the 3rd. The MU QB kinda laid there for a few seconds dazed and Briggs stepped over him like a prize fighter ending a fight. Excuse me? Take a look at the scoreboard....it was 37-7. Don't EVER pull a stunt like that again. I love Briggs...he plays hard and wreaks havoc but that was classless. I saw another BG player trash talking with an MU player late in the 3rd quarter...all the MU player did was point to the scoreboard. Ouch. Let that be a lesson. While we were pissing and moaning, MU was playing. End of story. I am not wearing orange glasses today and decided to step out of being a BG fan and looking at yesterday as a casual fan. I'm sorry but that's what I saw.
I need to remember we still have a young team...they are still learning. BUT, there is simply no excuse to come out and perform that poorly. The D couldn't stop anything yesterday. Miami is a good team but not THAT good. Offensively, we all knew we would need a running game at some point. We still don't have one and that is frustrating and a BiG concern.
Last week, I thought "Well, BC is in the top 5 and a great team so it was just a bad day". Yesterday, was much worse against a team we could have beaten. We definitely have no room for error in the East the rest of the way. KSU, OU, Akron and Buffalo are all must win games and we have to hope MU loses two in the East. This was a huge divisional game and we laid an egg. Ugh.
MU got rocked by Cincy 47-10 at home and the next week got creamed by Colorado 42-0. Since then, they've been playing good ball. BG can do the same thing but we're gonna have to dig deep and pull together.
I will never have a problem with a team that plays hard for 60 minutes and yet comes up on the short end. NEVER. However, I have a major problem with the lack of desire I saw yesterday. There is simply no excuse for lack of effort. I am always supportive of the team, coaching staff and program...always will be. But that was inexcusable yesterday.
It's over and done with and here we lose another one to MU. That's 1-8 in the last 9 vs. that school. What gives?
The thing that worries me now is Kent's D. They are arguably the best D unit in the conference. College football is a crazy game every week so who knows what will happen next Saturday? We'll be there no matter what and at least this will only be a 15 min ride instead of 4 hours.
C'mon BG! Get it outta the system and get after the Flashes!!!!
On the positive side, the lodge at Hueston Woods is awesome! We had a great time spending the night there...so beautiful and peaceful. We'll definitely be going back. And one other thing...Toledo lost again so that was good.

Freak, I notcied the same thing and I'm glad someone else had a problem with it also. That was the worst part of the day for me. You know it's bad when the Miami people around was were saying how classes and pointless that was, and all I could do was agree with them.

137,
That really bothered me. I mean, REALLY bothered me. I like to pride myself that BG is a classy program who doesn't take cheap shots and such but I couldn't stand it when I saw that happen...are you kidding me???

Where you talking about Haneline in the 3rd trash talking with the Miami bench after he got blocked in the back? That drove me nuts!!! Why is he trash talking to the Miami bench down 37-7?

Luckily they didn't show any of that on the Television, or at least if they did I didn't catch it.

I forgot about Haneline. But this was one of our D backs that was trash talking with an MU WR> He just pointed to the scoreboard.

That paragraph sums up my feelings perfectly. I will never fault a hard-fought effort, win or lose. But knowing what was at stake yesterday and the seeming lack or preparedness from the coaching staff down to the players infuriates me. And the biggest problem is it isn't the first time its happened under this regime.

Excellent post Freak. I feel like you have a very realistic view on things. I still think this team has the potential to bounce back and win the East. College football is just that crazy this year. However, its going to take a lot more hard work from players and coaching staff. We will find out this team's true character really soon...

Thanks BGSUFootballFan...I, too, still think this team can win the East. But if the team that showed up yesterday in Oxford shows up again, it ain't gonna happen. Period.
Gut check time, indeed.

I'm trying real hard to share some people's optimism re: the remainder of the season, however after the last two weeks (and more importantly the last few years) I can't bring myself to believe that this team is capable of even keeping a game close. (save Toledo of course

) Lack of an effective gameplan, abscence of class, inability to make half-time adjustments, and what seems to be an inability to effectively motivate are all short-comings that must inevitably end up on one indivual's plate of responsibility. Take a look at all (whether it be BCS or NAIA) successful football programs and they have one thing in common. A leader who knows the game, knows his players, and most importantly knows what it takes to get the best out of every individual he is responsible for. At this time and barring a minor miracle, I honestly believe that GB is NOT that man.
I honestly hope and pray that I am wrong and if so, I will eat each and every one of these words. I will also continue to support the young men on the field with my passion and my presence at the Doyt, however I think that the time has come for a change.
Respectfully submitted,

Yep...hanging with the Freak Family was the only thing that kept us there past half time. That was the single most disappointing performance since the Kent game in 2006.
We've now dropped three straight to UT and Akron and two straight to Miami. On the bright side...we have games with OU, Buffalo and EMU pon the horizon. We're on winning streaks against all of them.
Then again, maybe that means we're due to lose...

At this point I don't think any game can be looked at as a sure win. We're on a serious decline, no matter what the eternal optimists say.

Excellent points 'Freak and I agree 100 percent with everything you said above. I thought after four games into the season we had found our identity and I liked what I saw. We showed a lot of promise and we seemed to have put the last two years in the rearview mirror and appeared headed in a new direction. I had a few concerns, but all in all I thought we were in good shape and on paper, we actually appeared to possibly be the top team in the MAC.
But sometimes I tend to be a little pessimistic when it comes to BG. I love that school and I love its teams, but I certainly don’t drink the orange kool-aid or wear the orange glasses. Sometimes I take heat for stating my opinion in that matter, but that’s the way it is for me. I always have hope and I always believe we can do it, but after 15 years of witnessing things like: The Fat Punter, Grunkemeyer’s Heave, The Debacle in DeKalb, The NCAA Snubbings, Omar Goes Down, Gradkowski’s Drive, etc., I have almost come to expect that someway, somehow, things will crumble for my beloved Falcons. I need to finally see it to believe it. A MAC Championship in football, a MAC Tournament tirle and NCAA appearance in basketball, they are always our goals every year but since I stepped foot on campus in 1993, they’ve always been out of our reach.
After WKU, I took a good hard look at our schedule and thought, man, we could really be singing a different tune around here in the next month with games vs. BC, Miami, Kent State and Ohio looming. Well, it didn’t take a month, two weeks in and we’ve done a complete 180. I sort of wrote off the BC game as well, thinking that we more or less self-destructed more than we were dominated. As for Miami, any BG fan knows they have hd our number over the course of the series history, and they have pretty much owned us for the last decade or so for that matter. But like you said, Miami is much improved, but damn, they aren’t THAT good. This was a team playing without numerous starters and we made them look like the #1 team in the country out there. They simply crushed us, they dominated us, it was men against boys out there. I asking myself, how is this happening? We are getting destroyed by a team we should be going nose to nose with. This was a huge game for us and we played as poorly as we have all season and as bad as times last year.
There’s no question that if BG could play as well as some of us care about these teams, we’d be MAC Champions every year. Yeah, I know they are just games and we’re talking about sports here, but while I do not drink the orange kool-aid and don’t wear the orange glasses, I do bleed orange! We are so much better than what we showed yesterday and I can only hope we can get things corrected immediately and get back to representing BG the way we know it can be.

Freak, I absolutely agree with you. That was ugly. I saw little emotion on the sidelines. I saw much more emotion from the fans, which after the first two touchdowns decreased immensely.
Instead of focusing on the negatives, I saw several positives (I'm the eternal optimist).
Sitting next to Mrs. Freak was a wonderful experience (yes Freak, I was the blonde loud-mouth with the equally loud mouthed brunette and red-head). It was wonderful to see such a family with the true Falcon spirit. Flipper, your daughter is absolutely adorable and I'm glad to see you have already corrupted her to the orange and brown.
Our kick returns seemed to do a better job than they have in the past.
Our fans were classy....we were quiet and respectful during Roethlisberger's and Hoepner's tributes. I also didn't hear any BG fans get into it with Miami fans.
Our fans are also much better than Miami. Our fans get involved in the game. I don't think I've ever heard fans that are winning by that much be that quiet.
I know this is the football forum, but the FMB blows the MUMB out of the water. The fans barely even cheered when the MUMB finished their halftime show (not that it was spectacular....it did nothing for me). At BG, even the worst shows get a lot better response in the Doyt.....and the Doyt blows Yager out of the water. It's much more fan-friendly.
Anyway, we all need to shake it off and be ready for Kent. I'll be there to once again lose my voice...but this time it will be for victory over the Flashes!!

Falconfliccbone,
U ROCK. Simply put. I love seeing and heaing loud, postitive fans. You and your friends were great. Thanks for the kind words about the family. Both Freaklings were nearly as upset as I was simply cuz it stings...and it hurts...and it sux to see a game like that. I'm over it now...can't change the past. Time to focus on Kent. If you and your friends are interested, you can stop by our house in Green on the way home and hang for a while. We have people over to the house after every game vs Kent or Akron over here. The more the merrier...we'll have chips and you can bring whatever you want grilled an dyour fave beverages! This invitation is open to any FALCONS going to the game!! PM me or find me at the game and I'll give you directions! ALL FALCONS ARE WELCOME!
And as far as a band??? Please. The Fabulous FMB is the best...you guys always rock. MU put me to sleep.
Time to move on. You don't get things done sitting around feeling sorry for yourself. You get moving to slap the crap outta the next guy on the block.
BEAT KENT!!!
