Willie's big day...historically speaking

While my effort at AZZBlog has been lacking somewhat with life getting in the way, Willie Geter's 203 yard effort was worth writing home about. (MAC East Off. POW, too! Congrats!)
He's the 10th Falcon to rush for over 200 yards in a game. I did some digging and
here's what I found about the others.

Nice work!
I remember watching Daryl Story my freshman year and thinking about how great he was going to be. There are many sad & tragic details (which my memory has long since obscured) that led to him eventually fading into the sunset.
I was thrilled to witness Pope's big day against Western. My favorite run is still that very long TD near the end of the first half. BG was already throttling the Broncos and regained possession with about two minutes left. I said, "well, they'll just run out the clock now." Noah said, "nope, they're going to score again." Next play, bang, Pope rips off an 88-yard run. It was also only Bowling Green's second defensive shutout since 1994.

Congrats to Willie and the Big Boys up front for a superb rushing day! POTW is always cool.
I remember that game in 98 against Kent. Steve Holmes was a little used back but that day, he shredded the Kent D. It started a 3 game winning streak as BG beat Kent 42-21, trounced unbeaten Marshall 34-13 and walloped Akron 58-21. Three home games in a row...something that rarely happens at BG.
Of course, BG then went to WMU and got run over 56-27.

Thanks 87. I figured the Story story had to involve injuries or something, although it was interesting to see a couple others on the 200 yard list that had days like that, but fell short of 1,000 for their careers.

There was some other drama involved with Story. I wish my memory woudn't betray me like this.
Of course the combination of McClure's passing and Bernard White's running in the next few years made it easy for Story to fade into the woodwork.

A quick search at the BG News archive at the CAC site has a headline from oct. 85 about "story rebounding from suspension"

Story's story was very sad and ended up with him well, manhandling his girlfriend.
I still remember his idiot play at Northern Illinois which turned the game NI's way and cost us the bowl game. GRRRR

Yuck. Kinda makes me wish Willie had picked up 23 more yards...

Willie's got 3.5 years left here...wouldn't suprise me at all to see him break that 200 yd barrier again

If we run him it would not surprise me if he did it again this year. He is a breakaway back, and those kinds of guys put up big numbers fast. I think he has a better chance this year then the next two. Although next year, good luck deciding who to try to key on with Sheehan in shotgun flanked by Ransom and Geter (who can both easily shift to the slot) Partridge and Barnes on the outsides and WR #3 out there too (Turner?). With this offense, I think the most dynamic thing about having Geter and Ransom is that fact, they can shift in and out from the slot to RB.

I really think the first 2 words should be switched in the title for this thread! haha
