McRae finally got to us in a big way the 4th time around!

After Ohio’s Kalvin McRae ran wild over us this weekend, I was thinking back to some of our recent games with Ohio and couldn’t really remember anything that stood out to me about him in the previous three years despite him being an All-MAC performer. McRae is obviously a very good running back and it seems like he’s been playing for about eight years, but after doing a little research, I was pretty stunned to see just how well we held him in check for the first three years and what he did to us the last time around.

In 2004, 2005 & 2006 combined, McRae rushed for a total of 37 times for only 115 yards and didn’t scored a single TD’s. All three games were BG wins. In last Saturday’s contest, he rushed 42 times for 200 yards and 3 TD’s in a BG loss. McRae had 5 more carries in the last game than he did in the previous three combined and he nearly doubled his rushing total from all three games combined in just one outing. Obviously, he found the endzone three times as well which he couldn’t do once in the previous three meetings. Here's the breakdown:

2007: McRae 42-200, 3 TD = OU 38, BG 27
2006: McRae 16-55, 0 TD = BG 21, OU 9
2005: McRae 13-32, 0 TD = BG 38, OU 14
2004: McRae 8-28, 0 TD = BG 41, OU 16

The biggest thing I notice there is that in the other games we were playing with leads, I'm just guessing but I bet OU threw it a lot more.

So he averaged a shade under 4 ypc over his career. Not bad, but he certainly didn't own us.

The point I was trying to make was we did a tremendous job against him in the first three games, but in the last one, he just blew up and it was pretty impressive (or disgusting - depending on the way you look at it) how what he did in game four easily exceeded what he did in the first three games combined by far.
