Should BG-EMU be a trophy game?
Perhaps this is urban legend, but I seem to recall once hearing or reading that for a while Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan were No. 2 and No. 1 when it came to churning out teachers.
Sounds like a great excuse to have a trophy for this football game.
What if we had ... a Golden Apple?
Seems to me trophies are good. And for those who might not want to see Eastern Michigan as a peer... well:
1. Minnesota and Michigan play for a brown jug, Michigan owns that "rivalry."
2. Akron and Youngstown State have the Steel Tire Trophy, and they aren't even at the same level of Division I.
What do you all think?
Also: Are there any teachers out there who give us (well, me) an idea whether Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan are churning out a ton of teachers? I can't find any kind of national comparison anywhere.

As a former Eastern student who transfered to and graduated from BG, I can tell you that each school is well known for turning out teachers. BG has one of the better reputations in Ohio, MI and Indiana for it's teachers. EMU is respected as well in that regard. Both universities were founded as "Normal" schools, aka teacher training centers. I think it would be a great idea to have another rivalry game. I had no idea that Kent and BGSU were rivals, until I saw that there was an actual name for the annual battle according to EA Sports and their NCAA series of games! I say bring it on! Maybe a Golden Feather trophy, since both schools have avian mascots. And even for the EMU Huron purists, a feather is a part of traditional Native American ceremonial attire!
"It's not fast food, it's good food quickly!"
A lot of small to mid sized universities have reputations for producing quality teachers. BG and EMU are definitely on that list.
Problem is, when articles come out saying what institutions are good in whatever programs, it rarely is a reflection of how well their students do in the workforce (in my opinion). Even though I'm a teacher and a proud graduate of BGSU, I have to concede that a lot of the respect that our program gets comes from the publishing that our professors and grad students are required to do.
I've seen some of the best professors get sent down the road because they didn't publish enough articles. Unfortunately, that is how the college scene works. It's one of the reasons why I have no ambition to ever teach at the college level.
BG is still a great place to get a teaching degree, and graduates are taken seriously by schools looking for teachers. However, the respect the program gets isn't earned honestly (once again, in my opinion). The respect is deserved, but not for the right reasons.
Having said that, my vote is to call it: The No Trophy Left Behind Act
Go Falcons!

99, At least PART of the reason for the "ANNIVERSARY" AWARD played for between KSU and BG is due to the fact that both schools were FOUNDED in the same year.falconfan1999 wrote:As a former Eastern student who transfered to and graduated from BG, I can tell you that each school is well known for turning out teachers.

Heck, I'd go further and say that's ALL of it.Class of 61 wrote: 99, At least PART of the reason for the "ANNIVERSARY" AWARD played for between KSU and BG is due to the fact that both schools were FOUNDED in the same year.
Anyway, gosh, what a lame name for a trophy. "Anniversary Award?"
That's irked me for a while. We could have done better.
In fact, it's almost as bad as choosing "Eagles" instead of "Green Hornets" or "Express" -- which, according to Wikipedia, is what our next opponent actually did.

I'm serious.redskins4ever wrote:Im trying to decide if this is an actual serious thought or not to have a trophy for this game which means nothing to either program in the grand scheme of things.
I suspect our fans care less about playing this opponent than any other member of the MAC. So, look, a trophy can't hurt.
And, by your line of thinking, Michigan ought to throw the Brown Jug -- or whatever it is they get for playing Minnesota -- in the trash.
The difference is that the Brown Jug has a story behind it. The Peace Pipe has a story behind it. Let's not try creating history just because our fans don't care about Eastern Michigan.Schadenfreude wrote:I'm serious.

Anyways, Washington/Washington State already play for an Apple Trophy:
The Apple Cup

As a current BG Education Student, I have to give that idea a resounding +1mmisbg wrote:A lot of small to mid sized universities have reputations for producing quality teachers. BG and EMU are definitely on that list.
