Walker missing from Big 33 team

Associated Press

Practices for the Big 33 high school football game between Ohio and Pennsylvania began this week. At least one name player won't be in a Pennsylvania uniform, though his absence comes as no surprise.

Neil Walker helped Pine-Richland reach the PIAA Class AAA championship game last year as a receiver-defensive back. After being named to the Pennsylvania roster, he received a $2 million signing bonus after being the Pirates' first-round draft choice and is currently playing at Class A Bradenton (Gulf Coast Rookie League).

Replacing Walker on the Pennsylvania roster is Nate Waldron, a 6-foot, 195-pound wide receiver and defensive back from Rochester. The 47th annual Big 33 game matching Pennsylvania against Ohio will be Saturday night in Hershey.

Waldron was a four-year starter, ending his high school career with more than 3,600 yards rushing while playing for two PIAA Class A championship teams.

"There are so many great players in the state that it's tough to pick just 33," Rochester coach Gene Matsook said. "I like to think Nate was the 34th player and his getting moved up to the Big 33 is a great honor."

Waldron rushed for 1,135 yards on 185 carries with 16 touchdowns last season despite missing three games with an ankle sprain, but will probably see most of his Big 33 action on defense.

"They're going to use him at strong safety, at least that was the plan," Matsook said. "Nate has that good speed and that's what you need in a game like that where you have to play man coverage."

Waldron is penciled in to play safety at Bowling Green.
