Came accross this picture when I was looking at some old media guides. Here you can see just how close Memorial Hall was to the field. From my understanding the football team dressed in Memorial Hall then took the field from what would be the Northeast corner of the football field. . . .

I am assuming Memorial Hall is now Anderson? I saw an aerial photo somewhere that showed the field between what we all know now as the Business Building and Rodgers/Kohl. The field ran east to west, if memory serves me correctly. Does that sound right DD.

That is correct, but Memorial Hall is still Memorial Hall, and Anderson Arena is inside of Memorial Hall.
Ever notice when they say "Tickets are available at the Memorial Hall ticket office."
The building is Memorial Hall, which houses ROTC, classrooms etc., while the part where they play hoops is considered AA.

Now that you say that yes, I remember that being the case, but that is splitting hairs.

DD,
Thanks for putting up that pic...took me back to the "old days" since it was the ONLY stadium I knew as an undergrad... You're right, the field did run E-W, which was TERRIBLE on windy days!! Think about Perry and how it's affected and it has the West stands to "screen" some of the prevailing winds... I can remember sitting thru a BRUTALLY cold game vs. Miami in early 60's ...when some friends took a bathroom break at halftime and NEVER returned to the field.... But the 59 Natl Championship vs. Delaware was played here....a game I'll never forget...the Blue Hens came in #1 and BG was #2 in the "Small College" division ( now I-AA)...and we smacked em. Bernie Casey and Chuck Comer were among the stars of that team with other guys like Colburn, Harbaugh, etc. Saw OSU that year too, and it was another year where I honestly think if the two had met, we'd have taken them.

Team actually b-4 AA built, used to dress in "Men's Gym" which was on NW corner of stadium. Players lived underneath stadium.
What I find interesting about that picture is the seated fans are in the end zone--not an empty to be had and note the SRO--fans ringed the field many times.
Would be interesting to see what average attendance was in that era.

Averaged just about 10,000 or a little over. Almost every game in the early 60's was a sellout or close to it. The seat right behind our bench (south side) were prime and often filled an hour or two prior to kickoff, just so you could hear Doyt. It was hysterical......he was a very funny man, especially if you knew a little about football.
