It's kind of hard to believe that just five short years ago (in 2002), BG was beating the crap out of these two teams: BG 51, Mizzou 28 & BG 39, KU 16.

Did you see Mangino's face as he shook Mizzou's coaches hand??? It looked completely blue...think he was holding his breath or just stopped breathing due to being on the field without food for awhile?

Help from someone please.....Why did Kansas NOT go for an on-side kick after the safety? Is there something in the rule book that prohibits such a play after a safety? The announcers said nothing yet I have to believe that "Amstutz senior" (He has to have at LEAST 50#'s on our boy Tommy

), if allowed would have definitely set this type of play up?

I thought that was strange, too.

There is no rule against it. They should have tried it.

I got married the day of the BG win over Mizzou. At our wedding reception, we had the DJ announce the final score. It was great!

Most likely because the free kick takes place from the 20 yardline.

That is true, but a team is never expecting it on the free kick.

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.
There was 15-20 seconds left in the game, it doesn't matter if they were kicking off from the 1, they should have done it. (Unless there really is a rule against it.)
But speaking of safeties....how's that Lenahan kid doing? I hope he had a nice trip.

You can not onside kick a free kick.

You certainly can onside a free kick. Actually a kickoff after a TD and a kickoff after a safety are both considered free kicks. I can recall many years ago seeing the Miami Dolphins onside kick after a safety from a punt formation and recover the kick.
A couple excerpts from Section 6 of the NCAA Rulebook regarding kicks:
"Unless relocated by a penalty, the kicking
team’s restraining line on a kickoff shall be its 30-yard line, and for a free
kick after a safety, its 20-yard line."
"ARTICLE 3. A Team A player may touch a free-kicked ball:
a. After it touches a Team B player (Exception: Rule 6-1-4).
b. After it breaks the plane of and remains beyond Team B’s restraining
line (Exception: Rule 6-4-1) (A.R. 2-11-2-I).
c. After it touches any player, the ground, an official or anything beyond
Team B’s restraining line.
Thereafter, all players of Team A become eligible to touch, recover or
catch the kick. Illegal touching of a free kick is a violation that, when the
ball becomes dead, gives the receiving team the privilege of taking the ball
at the spot of the violation. However, if there are offsetting fouls or if a
penalty incurred by either team before the ball becomes dead is enforced,
this privilege is canceled (A.R. 6-1-3-I)."

I would love to add my two cents on this topic...but after the safety I threw stuff and got up and left....Don't really know what happened then!
I did have my BG jersey on though!

Not if you punt the free kick. If you tee it up, which Kansas did, the basic 10 yard rule applies.

Thanks to all for answering my question and special thanks to Tek-boy for once again proving his true colors (which are NOT burnt orange and seal brown).
