First Florida Now Georgia

Great news for our Falcons IMO. A step in the right direction no doubt.

I have talked about the changes I would like to see ad nauseum. (Thats my first ever use of the term and it appears mis-spelled). And I realize they will never happen.

First a 16 team tournament. 11 conference Winners plus 5 at large. Seeded by a committee. Games take place in the traditional bowl settings. No layoff after season. Atmost 2 teams have there year extended by 4 weeks. 2 more for 3 weeks. 4 more for 2 weeks and 8 more for 1 week. All other bowls can take place as well. There meaningless now in terms of who wins the national title. No reason why you still could not have them. Even two games at the same site.

Bowl Re-match weekend. Teams that played in bowls rematch week 4 of the regular season at the bowl winners home site.

Teams, with rare exceptions, are allowed only 6 home games in the 12 week season.

I'm on board with a 16 team playoff with 11 guaranteed bids & 5 at large. I would never support any other playoff model.

All schools in Division 1A deserve a shot at not only winning a national title, but also a true shot to get a piece of the money that is currently being siphoned directly to the perennial powers. I don't think it will ever happen, but it is the proper way to play out a college football season. This current bowl setup is just stupid.

Thats the point. "Mid-Major" conferences should be against ANY playoff system that does not include a representative from EVERY bowl sub-division 1 conference. We all know the 5 at-large bids will go to the "power conferences" so this is a way to assure representation.

I'm still not a fan of a playoff system ... the bowls, in general, are fine with me, given some minor tweaking.

But if they're going to do a playoff, I think one of the fundamentals is that every D-1A (or whatever the name is these days) conference gets a bid. Past that, have at it.

So there are 11 conferences. A 12-team playoff system could, technically, work: 11 conference champs, 1 at-large and a rather complex bracket with byes. But I'm with hammb, you really have to go to 16 teams to make it legitimate. Then the five at large bids could all go to the current BCS conferences, but at least the mid-majors would be guaranteed a slot. And, as he astutely points out, it assures a slice of the financial pie. Although, honestly, some folks in the media need to grow some and challenge the NCAA on the revenue dispersement. This good ol' boys crap has got to end.

There would obviously still be room, as Globetrotter speculates, for the bowls as strictly exhibitions (which they are, for all intent and purposes, now).

The main loss in this scenario would be a lot of the tradition and pageantry of the bowls; the lower tier bowls would likely be the first victims. Anyone who's been to Mobile for the pre-GMAC Bowl parade would be saddened to see that cut out of the post-season.
