SPRING GAME REPORT(S)
Give us who could not attend, a full report, Please. . . .
I was only there for a drive for each team, and I really couldn't make out much, but here's some observations.
Brown moved down the field first and got absolutely nowhere with a couple of Bullock runs and a Hunter sack. Orange defense looked good, but Brown offensive line was pretty bad. Orange took over on offense, and it was kinda weird. Brown's D line is for the most part the starting D line against Pitt, unless anything changes, but they got pushed all around by the Orange O line. Willie Geter ran crazy, and just about all the tackles on the drive were by defensive backs. Sheehan had a nice pass in there to Pronty. Almost in the red zone, it was third down and Sheehan was nearly picked off. So the defensive backs played well there, but the D line was just bad. Norsic nailed a field goal, and about then I had to leave.
From what I've heard, the Brown D line got good in a hurry, though. I heard they got a lot of pressure, and Briggs was just all over the QBs and RBs all game long. Can't tell you this first person, only second hand account. The offense apparently never really got in rythm and had some pretty bad miscues, and the defense apparently looked good. However, I wonder how much of the defense looking good was a product of the offense having miscues. Also, nobody ever saw our starting O line all together, so that certainly hindered the offense. All in all, it is hard to tell where the team is, but the defense did look good. Lets just hope that the O line gets good, the offense gels, and the defense wasn't just looking good against a divided offense but that they will look good against Pitt!
And please, somebody who was there the whole time give a detailed report ...

That would have been D J Young.bgsufalcon24 wrote:Whoever the left tackle was for the orange team will be having nightmares tonight, Briggs had about 4 sacks in the first half and didn't let up. He's going to have a Devon Parks-esque season this year, book it.

Yeah, the offense didn't look too great at least in the passing game. Sheehan looked okay in the pocket moved around a bit but of course as soon as anyone lands a hand on his jersey its called a sack so thats not really telling.
The defenses seemed to dominate most of the game but I wonder or fear if thats because we're not very good at O-line which means our offense will be mediocre at best or our D is just some how real good this year which would be a complete and total shock given our history. I hope its the latter for our sakes.

I completely agree about the divided rosters not giving a complete picture of how individual position units will stack up in a real game situation. Put them together, build some chemistry, add a few more months in the weightroom and the reps they'll get in fall practice and you'll see significant improvement.

Look..one offense was run by a walk on QB. Both OLines were patchwork units that hadn't worked together much. Dodge and Steffy were on the sidelines with the orange team (don't know who was over on the brown side not dressed) so you didn't have a full complement of guys from the two deep playing. I wouldn't get too alarmed about the OL or the offense just yet.
DJ Young was really struggling trying to contain Briggs...Diyral was getting off the ball VERY fast and Young just doesn't have the footwork down now to get outside and slow him down. Then again...just about every other OT in the MAC struggles against Diyral, so who knows.
Ream played well...Basler stood out too...Champ Fells made a couple of really nice plays. Overall, the defense looked a step faster than what we're used to seeing and they tackled well. I think our defense will be pretty decent this year.
Sheehan didn't look that good today. He made some reallly odd decisions...he would throw into double and triple coverage even though he had open recievers to go to. Nate Brown was throwing some NICE passes while playing catch on the sideline...the kid looked like he was playing a leisurely came of catch and the ball was still going 50 yards...he threw a few 30-40 yard ropes too. If he gets his butt in gear academically, he could find himslef in the mix at QB.

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
It was his very first time playing the tougest position to play on the offensive line against an All-MAC defensive end. My gawd, he might not be Orlando Pace just yet!Falconboy wrote:Excellent move of Gregg Brandon.Warthog wrote:That would have been D J Young.bgsufalcon24 wrote:Whoever the left tackle was for the orange team will be having nightmares tonight, Briggs had about 4 sacks in the first half and didn't let up. As rare as it is on the football board I have to agree with most of what Flipper saidFlipper wrote:Look..one offense was run by a walk on QB. Game was probably the most boring spring game I've ever attended at BG. The OL is clearly thin on talent (hence so many newcomers). Combine that with having a couple guys hurt and the remaining guys split up between two teams it made for a pretty ugly game. The defense was completely dominating the LOS. Not sure that's an indicator of things to come, but tough to get a guage as patchwork as the OL looked.
Turner wasn't really used at all until the TD pass. Bullock had some nice runs when he got holes, but those were pretty sparse. Geter made some nice plays, but really couldn't get much space either.
Hunter struggled, but if Brown is eligible Hunter is likely 4th string, so I'm not real concerned about him. Like Flip said Brown looked damn good throwing the ball between periods...kid definitely has an arm. Sheehan looked pretty bad, but did make a couple nice throws late in the scrimmage.
All in all it was a pretty boring spring game, probably the worst in the last 5-6 years. We really need to get some OL guys healthy and get them to gel...the groups that played today (who likely hadn't played together much) really struggled.

I'd love to report what I saw out of the team at the spring game, however I must admit I didn't watch that much of it. What I did see was rather boring. Niz talked me into playing with the band, so I was having too much fun forgetting how to play Ay Zig. I do think there's promise for next year, but there is also plently of concern too.

For those of you who missed it, Coach Brandon had the stadium mic out on the field and he was interviewing kids...he was asking them what they thought the offense should run and so forth.
Unless my eyes are shot...I do believe that one of those kids was a freakling. Although when the young man called for a pass on 4th and 2 I had to wonder if that was the Freak's kid or Mick McCall's...

LOL! Yeah, Jake and Josh were hanging down on the field for a while.
